From Town & Country

Jason Wu is known as a designer of classic silhouettes with modern twists, from the inaugural ball gown he made for Michelle Obama to the green sheath he created for Meghan Markle for her 2018 Fiji tour.

Now, Wu has designed his first-ever sofa collection for customizable furniture brand Interior Define. The refined midcentury-style piece is right in line with the designer’s aesthetic, which is as rigorous in home décor as it is in fashion. “If I put this sofa in my apartment, it would look like it had always been there,” Wu tells T&C.

While midcentury design is ubiquitous these days, Wu’s obsession with the era predates the Mad Men frenzy. Fifties-era glamour was always a source of inspiration for his collections; he cites Charles James as one of his all-time favorite couturiers. From there, it was natural that he would gravitate toward the homes where all his favorite designs were originally worn.

“I visited the John and Dominique de Menil house in Houston, where James did the interiors and Philip Johnson did the exteriors, so you have this very modern approach combined with really chic, colorful interiors full of velvet and taffeta," Wu says. "I love the contrast of opulence and clean lines.”

Wu clarifies he wasn’t interested in a replica: “There are a lot of midcentury-style sofas out there, I didn’t want to be literal.” This meant updating the proportions of the sofa to be equally cozy sitting or laying down (Wu is nothing if not pragmatic-his own apartment is gray in part because it matches his cats). It also meant that Wu considered how the sofa would look in each combination someone might choose. The sofa comes in a two-seat or three-seat lengths with an optional chaise sectional attached-add two frame options (matte black or walnut) and over 60 fabric and color options, not to mention the ottoman and chair in the collection, and the possibilities are endless.

Meticulous? Absolutely. But Wu wouldn't want it any other way, and with his track record, anyone who objects can, well, take a seat.
