Jason Sudeikis was on hand at the 2024 Golden Globes in Los Angeles last night, following his nomination for his heralded turn in the hit Apple TV comedy Ted Lasso. But the charming star was already turning heads before the ceremony started, when he stepped out on the red carpet in a laid-back lilac sweater and burnished rust-colored suit. It wasn't quite as jarring a WFH statement as the tie-dye hoodie he donned for the 2021 Globes, but it was still dressed-down enough to earn some indignant chiding from a few irate English pundits. (Some people will never be happy until the man is back in Tom Ford.)

But the real statement piece—the touch that set this ensemble off—was Sudeikis’s choice of footwear for the occasion: a pair of WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu’s Nike Sabrina 1s. The “West Coast Roots” edition of the enormously popular basketball sneaker comes in a dusky pink with bright yellow highlights, bringing a vibrant flair to the streamlined performance silhouette. It was a bold move for an occasion as traditionally formal as the Globes—and also something of a sneakerhead deep cut that only someone as plugged-in as Sudeikis could have nailed.

The Sabrina 1 has been everywhere in the basketball world since it dropped last year, becoming not only the marquee sneaker of the WNBA, but one of the most in-demand on-court models in the NBA as well. (Not for nothing did we recently dub it one of the best basketball shoes of 2023.) But the silhouette hasn’t had much impact in the streetwear scene: We’ve yet to see the sneaker worn much off the court, let alone paired with a suit at a Hollywood awards show, so the choice feels a lot more deliberate—and, let’s face it, original—than if he’d thrown on some Dunks or another obvious sneakerhead favorite. The combination really works, thanks to the classic vibe of the Sabrina 1 and the eye-catching colorway.

Of course, this is far from the only time that Sudeikis has impressed with his shoes. A widely renowned sneaker collector for years now, he owns a self-reported 250 pairs, according to an interview he did last year with the New York Times. This isn't even the first time Sudeikis has impressed with his shoes at this very awards ceremony: Back in 2016, he was on the Golden Globes red carpet in a pair of iconic “Concord” Jordan 11s, and he’s only honed his footwear chops since then. He’s been seen out and about in rare Travis Scott Jordans, fan-fave KDs, and viral-ready Chunky Dunkys. Even on Ted Lasso, he was always wearing heat: Sudeikis's fictional football coach sported so many coveted sneakers there’s an entire blog dedicated to IDing them.

The third and (for now) final season of Ted Lasso aired last year, so this will be the end (also for now) of the show’s reign at awards shows like the Globes. But whenever Jason Sudeikis returns with his next project, whatever it may be, one thing seems certain: He’ll be back with another pair of great sneakers. We can’t wait to see what he chooses.
