The upcoming CBS series reimagines the beloved television show of the same name, which ran from 1985-1995.

Jason Ritter signed on to the cast of the Matlock pilot, new reports reveal.

Ritter, who previously appeared in TV shows like Drunk History and A Million Little Things as well as co-starred in Raise Your Voice with Hilary Duff, is reported to play Julian, the son of the firm's top lawyer.

The character notes suggested that Julian is "diligent and persistent with a lot to prove" and struggling to prioritize his family while balancing his career. "He always considers the good of the firm, even if it pushes the boundaries between his work and personal life," the description concluded.

Ritter, 43, joins previously announced cast members, including Kathy Bates in the titular role of Madeline Matlock, Skye P. Marshall as Olympia, David Del Rio as Billy and Leah Lewis as Sarah.

The new CBS series is said to be inspired by the '80s television mystery series of the same name, which ran for nine seasons (airing from 1986 to 1995) and originally starred the late Andy Griffith as country-boy criminal defense attorney Ben Matlock opposite Julie Sommars, the late Clarence Gilyard, Nancy Stafford and Daniel Roebuck.

The official logline reads: "After achieving success in her younger years, the brilliant septuagenarian Madeline Matlock (Bates) rejoins the workforce at a prestigious law firm where she uses her unassuming demeanor and wily tactics to win cases and expose corruption from within."

According to Variety, the new series was written by Jennie Snyder Urman, who is also set to executive produce the pilot under Sutton Street Productions alongside Bates, Joanna KleinEric Christian Olsen and John Will.

Since production for the pilot is still underway, it will be some time before an expected release date is shared with fans of the original crime procedural.
