Jason Momoa has been a busy guy lately. The actor and Aquaman star has kept in shape during the pandemic, playing gym teacher to his two kids by rock-climbing and axe-throwing. It also turns out he had another project in the works, and he just recently unveiled the results: a video documenting the restoration of his wife’s first car.

Momoa married actress and activist Lisa Bonet in 2017; the two had known each other for more than a decade, after meeting in a jazz club. As he tells it in the video, Bonet’s first car, bought when she was 17 years old, was a 1965 Mustang GT convertible—not at all a bad vehicle for beginning your life on the road.

Tracking down and restoring that car, Momoa says in an Instagram photo caption, was 14 years of work. It’s not totally clear how he found Bonet’s first ride, but at the beginning of the video, it’s clearly seen better days. Rust is eating through the body; the convertible top is gone. The car may hold a lot of memories for Bonet, but a less-dedicated husband would probably declare it irrecoverable.

Momoa, though, hauled the wreck to Divine 1 Customs, who commenced a complete overhaul. As the video shows, no part of the car was left untouched: new engine, new paint job, and, obviously, a new convertible top. (You can see the dramatic before-and-after pics on their Instagram.)

Even if you’re not a gearhead, seeing Momoa’s labor of love will put a smile on your face. It’s especially touching to see Bonet reunited with her first car, now completely restored, before she and her family ride off together.
