Jason Momoa has apologized for his joke about raping women

Welp, this has been a week, and it’s safe to assume that you’ve seen the news over the past few days detailing the ongoing fallout from The New York Time’s lengthy report on (former) producer Harvey Weinstein. Since then, many other allegations have come to light, not all of them directed at Weinstein — just yesterday, a video started making the rounds on social media showing Ben Affleck grouping Hilarie Burton, and a top Amazon executive was just suspended for alleged harassment that happened during Comic-Con a few years ago.

Another thing that happened at San Diego Comic-Con: Jason Momoa made some comments about rape. The video comes from a Game of Thrones panel in 2011, back when Momoa was still on the show as Khal Drogo. When asked about what he likes about the genre, Momoa tells the crowd (pre-Hall H):

“But as far as sci-fi and fantasy, I love that genre because there are so many things you can do, like rip someone’s tongue out of their throat and get away with it and rape beautiful women.”

In the video, immediately after making the comments, costars Lena Headey and Kit Harington (seated to his left) bury their hands in their hat and hands, respectively. Emilia Clarke, to his right, looks shocked and stunned, barely moving. The audience erupts into nervous laughter, and even watching the video now, some six years later, it is awkward as hell. Rape jokes are never funny, not now, not never.

Now, Momoa has apologized for his comments in an Instagram post.

We’re pleased to see that he has owned up for his comments and offered an apology, but the comment shouldn’t have been made in the first place. It’s always best to think twice about your words, and actions, something Momoa learned the hard way today.
