Jason Derulo Talks Cats, That Instagram Controversy, and the Secret to a Good Thirst Trap

Jason Derulo has been busy promoting his new movie Cats—in theaters now—but he's also out here doing important work fighting for rights. For liberty. For freedom of expression. For men to reveal the outline of their penises on mainstream social media platforms!

“I really do think it’s discrimination,” the 30-year-old told TMZ, after Instagram removed a picture of Derulo in tightly fitting underwear that showed what looked like the outline of a Swell bottle. In a since-deleted post on Instagram he added, “I can’t help my size.”

Between penis-gate, Cats, and his new album, 2Sides, now seemed like the perfect time to ask the singer to answer our Inappropriate Questions, Glamour’s column that asks all the cheeky, slightly off-kilter stuff best saved for a second (or better yet, third) date. We went hard, deep, and long on his sexiest qualities, his take on ghosting, and the messiest thing he does in bed. Enjoy.

Glamour: Can you explain Cats for someone who’s never heard of it?

Jason Derulo: So it’s basically a group of cats that are competing to have a chance at getting a second life—it’s as if it’s their heaven, it’s a second chance.

Are you a cat person or a dog person?

Definitely a dog person.

So how did it go, making this movie?

No—there were never any cats on set.

Is it true that there was a cat expert on set who gave you cat lessons?

I don’t know what her other jobs are or where she gets other work—it seems like a one-time job—but she was incredible. Her name was Sarah. She gave us all the information you could possibly need to know about being a cat, like starting off the journey embodying a cat and different mannerisms so we could go home and do our own homework and not spend countless hours in the mirror embodying the cat.

Have you picked up any sexy tips from pretending to be a cat?

Definitely not. I feel like it’s kind of like algebra. You use it, and then you never need it again

What inspired you to put up that Instagram photo?

I just thought it was a really great photo of myself. I knew that it would be a good photo of me, but I didn’t know it would be my most liked and most talked about photo ever.

How does it feel to know that Instagram decided to take it down?

I think it’s not right! [Laughs] They said they had a full meeting to discuss it. I think it’s hilarious that people are flying out to talk about my meat.

Do you have any tips for taking a good thirst trap?

'Cause now I’m the guru? I think environment is important. Background is important. It’s nice to be somewhere that people would want to be. It has to be desirable—whether it’s a nice bedroom with nice sheets, whether it’s like a beach or a rainforest. That’s the beginning of any nice photo. Just being your authentic self in front of that background.

Who was your first celebrity crush?

Beyoncé.

Do you believe in astrology?

Like Zodiac signs? Not really. I think that’s more of a female thing.

What’s the weirdest thing you do in your alone time?

[Long pause and long laugh.] I don’t know if I do anything weird. If I’m alone, I eat in my bed 100% of the time. I don’t eat on tables.

What’s the messiest thing you’ve ever eaten in your bed?

Probably some kind of pasta.

Where's the most surprising place you’ve hooked up with someone?

On the beach in a foreign country. It was incredible and risky. The nerves add to thrill.

Have you ever ghosted someone?

What is this new term that people have been saying?

Ghosting—basically, it’s going on a few dates with someone, maybe two or more, and then you suddenly stop texting or calling them. You disappear, like a ghost. Has that happened to you, or have you done it to others?

Both. Both have happened. Mostly she’s done it to me because she has a boyfriend, she’s had a situation. From my standpoint, if you just realize somebody’s not really worth your time, I don’t think you should continue to waste your time. But if someone is asking for an explanation, I would give it to them. I wouldn’t just freeze them out and not explain anything.

What’s your favorite movie or TV love scene? Or sexiest music video?

"Promise" by Ciara. I think that song and video is super sexy.

What’s the sexiest thing about yourself?

I’m trying to figure out, like, should I make it physical or should I make it mental?

You could say one of each.

I think the sexiest thing about me is how I treat women. I think women should be treated like queens. So how I treat them when I’m actually in a relationship: like a queen.

What does that entail?

I think it entails being a romantic. Finding out what it is that they like, what it is they love to do, what makes them feel loved.

You’re alone in bed, about to fall asleep: What are you thinking about?

Heh. Um, I’m thinking of what my mindset is. My mindset is so different than it used to be. I used to think I’d have a situation by now where I’d be married with a couple of kids. But my mindset is so different now, I don’t see that in the near future. I feel surprised that my mindset’s changed so drastically. If you’d asked me five years ago, I would never in a million years think that I would be here. But I feel good, I feel happy in my skin. I feel like you have to learn to love yourself before you can love anyone else. I’ve been doing that, and it’s been wonderful.

Tell me about your new album 2Sides.

I released the first half, and I’m excited. It’s been four years since I've released new music, and I’m excited to get the music out and start putting the music videos out and whatnot.

Do you think your music makes a good sex playlist?

Definitely. I think "Diamonds" works really well for that.

Speaking of your songs, what’s a tip you would give someone who’s trying to work on their dirty talk?

I think it’s important to be free with your words but don’t go too far. Don’t get weird. Unless you know that person is into that. You should keep it in the wheelhouse of who your partner is. You have to know who your partner is! But you also have to be free and express what you want to express. It can be the greatest thing in the world to say the thing you want to say and not hold it inside. But the most important thing is learning your partner, learning what they want to hear.
