HGTV’s Help! I Wrecked My House is back with a second season—and it follows host Jasmine Roth fixing home renovations that are even more disastrous than the ones in season one. House Beautiful spoke to Roth to find out what she was most surprised to learn while working on the show, how she’s applying her newfound knowledge in her own home, and the standout renovations from the series’ new season.

The most surprising part about working on Help! I Wrecked My House, says Roth, “is realizing how far people will go without stopping to ask for help.” She explains, “It's not that they have poor intentions—it's just people not realizing their limits and getting in over their heads.”

When it comes to fixing anything electrical or plumbing-related, for instance, homeowners should leave it to the professionals. “I spend so much of my time helping my clients understand their capabilities when it comes to home renovation and stressing what they shouldn't be doing on their own—but it's also so important to understand what they can do to their houses themselves."

Some standout renovations featured on the new season include an added-on bedroom suite, which the homeowners tried to install without professional help. Needless to say, they failed "miserably," Roth says. But ultimately, "we were able to finish the addition and turn it into a beautiful main bedroom suite, along with a nursery for the family they were ready to start."

In another family's case, “the parents had given their kids the two functioning bedrooms and turned a converted garage into their main bedroom—and there wasn't even a door!” The entire floor plan was changed to incorporate a laundry room, a mudroom, and a master suite with a walk-in closet and an en-suite bathroom—not to mention a door.

“All this to say, I can't wait to share some of these main bedroom fiascos and hopefully show off some really good bedroom designs in the process,” Roth enthuses.

Roth adds that the series has opened her eyes to how our homes can affect every single part of our lives. “If our homes are under construction or not set up to work for us, it hurts our relationships, our bank accounts, our jobs, and even our health,” she asserts. And with many of us spending more time than ever at home, Roth knows all too well that the stakes have “never been higher when it comes to home construction.”
