The world was—naturally, justifiably—disappointed to learn that Karl Lagerfeld's cat Choupette would not be attending tonight's Met Gala honoring the late, legendary designer. Lagerfeld was an icon in the realm of fashion and beyond; so, too, is Choupette. Fluffy, furry, and far cuter than you might expect a man like Lagerfeld—whose austere personal fashion sense and unsmiling face were core components of his public persona—to choose as a feline companion, Choupette is simply the kind of cat you want to see on the red carpet. Sadly, it seemed we would not.

But then, there she was. Except she was six feet tall. Bigger, even. She was mugging for the cameras. She was doing catlike things with her paws. She was...tearing her own head off. She was Jared Leto!

Is it entirely shocking that the person who was lurking inside the giant Choupette costume was Jared Leto? It is not. This is the same man who, at the 2019 iteration of this very event, carried an exceedingly realistic replica of his own head around on the red carpet. Dude loves a gag and a gimmick, and dressing as a giant Choupette fits the bill quite nicely.

You've also got to give him credit for really committing to the bit. Choupette is a Birman, a long-haired breed, and while artistic license must be granted, it's a little disappointing that Doja Cat, in her own ode to the kitty in question, did not fully embrace the floof.

That said, a man in a huge, honkin' furry 'stume on the red carpet of an event like the Met Gala feels a little off, right? Let's ask another attendee.
