Janelle Monáe’s Met Gala Playlist Will Get the Party Started

To commemorate a very different first Monday in May this year, Vogue asked some of our favorite stars to create a playlist featuring timeless songs inspired by the theme of this year’s Met gala and the upcoming Costume Institute exhibition, “About Time: Fashion and Duration.”

Janelle Monáe, who graced the red carpet in a Christian Siriano confection at 2019’s Met gala, knows how to party. Her playlist begins with “Frontin’” by Pharrell because it makes her “feel like the coolest girl in the room.” Then, she takes us on a musical trip via Stevie Wonder (“the godfather of party music, no matter the occasion”), “Just a Girl” by No Doubt (“a feminist anthem”), and several Prince cuts (after all, he is “the greatest writer”).

Monáe’s playlist also has plenty of personal and cultural resonance, as shown by tracks like Missy Elliott’s “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)”: “She is a legend, and this changed the script for black women creatives,” Monáe tells Vogue. And the kicker? None other than “Tightrope,” one of her own timeless hits: “This makes feel like you can beat all odds, no matter the decade.”

This year, because of the global health crisis, the Met gala and the Costume Institute exhibition have been postponed. Instead, on Monday, May 4, Vogue is revisiting some of the most memorable moments in the history of the event, including the best looks and remarkable celebrity appearances.

To conclude the celebration, you’re invited to join Vogue for “A Moment With the Met,” available via livestream exclusively on YouTube. Beginning at 6 p.m. ET, the evening will feature an address by Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour, a special live performance by Florence + the Machine, and a DJ set from Virgil Abloh.

Preview the exhibition, as captured by Hamish Bowles and Annie Leibovitz for the May issue of Vogue, here. A new date for the 2020 Met gala is yet to be finalized.
