Jane Lynch and Cyndi Lauper Are Making “ Golden Girls for Today”

Thank you for being a friend, Jane Lynch. The actress, who won a Creative Arts Emmy over the weekend for guest actress in a comedy for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, told press backstage that she had a new show coming. “I pitched a show to Netflix and they bought it,” she said. “I don’t know if I can even tell you, but it’s with Cyndi Lauper, so there! We’ll see.”

If Lynch thought she’d be able to get away with such a small but tantalizing morsel, she was wrong. Asked for more details, she dropped the most delightful description anyone could have expected: “We’re our age, I’m almost 60 and she’s 65, and we’re looking for our next act, without ever having had husbands or children. And there will be two other people who haven’t been cast yet. But it’s kind of a Golden Girls for today.”

Golden Girls, the NBC sitcom that spanned seven seasons, introduced four female characters of a certain age, played by Bea Arthur, Betty White, Rue McClanahan, and Estelle Getty. While it doesn’t sound like Lynch’s show is a direct remake of the franchise, it’s a rare thing indeed to see a show centered on women in their 60s, and the premise is very promising for fans of the classic series.

According to Variety, Netflix has not yet commented, so it may be some time before official confirmation arrives. But the outlet also dug up some information on Facebook about a possible collaborator: Comedian Carol Leifer posted on the social media platform about the project earlier this year: “It’s official, heading out next with a new half-hour comedy, starring Jane Lynch and Cyndi Lauper,” Leifer wrote. “A writer’s dream to work with these two legends. Can’t wait to see where we land.”
