Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin have been #friendshipgoals basically forever.

No offense to Patriots-turned-Bucs teammates Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski, but Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin do the BFF thing better. The pair, legends in their own rights, most recently shared the small screen for seven seasons in the Netflix smash comedy series Grace and Frankie.

That ended last year, but the two are teaming up once again, this time for a movie. 80 for Brady, which is set for a theatrical release on Saturday, Feb. 3, is inspired by a true story of women who—you guessed it—love Tom Brady. In the flick, Tomlin and Fonda join forces with other stalwarts Sally Field and Rita Moreno to try to score tickets to see Brady in Super Bowl LI. (Brady also stars.)

Though Tomlin and Fonda have played besties on-screen before, what is their relationship like when the director yells, "cut?" Here's what to know about Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin's friendship.

All signs point to yes. Lily Tomlin spills that she was a huge fan of Fonda for more than five decades!

"I've been a fan of hers since before I met her," Tomlin told the Washington Post in 2018. "I had a Klute hairdo when she did Klute." The film was released in 1971.

The feeling became mutual after Fonda saw Tomlin in her one-woman show Appearing Nightly.

"I went by myself, and I was just knocked off my feet," Fonda said during an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show. "I was totally smitten by her."

"We've been friends ever since," Tomlin told the Washington Post. "We're friends because I just love her. I know Jane has my back whenever she can."

They are. In a 2023 interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Tomlin admitted, "I don't really like people that much. I try to avoid them."

But clearly, she's not avoiding Fonda, who was sitting right next to her promoting their new flick 80 for Brady. Fonda spoke to the value of female friendships, like the one she shares with Tomlin.

"Women's friendships are very different than men's friendships," Fonda said. "They're very important to our health because [men] kind of sit side-by-side and watch sports or cars or women. Women sit facing each other, eye-to-eye, and they say, 'I'm in trouble. I need you. Can you help me?' You know, we're not afraid of being vulnerable."
