The 'Euphoria' star is attached to a remake of one of Fonda's most notable roles from the '60s.

At only 25 years old, Sydney Sweeney is on her way to stardom. She got her big break as Cassie Howard on Euphoria before quickly nabbing roles in major projects like Once Upon a Time in HollywoodThe White Lotus, and the upcoming Madame Web.

Next, she's set to play the title character in a remake of the 1968 sci-fi cult classic Barbarella, starring Jane Fonda when she was 30 years old.

But recently, while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter for their cover story, Fonda was asked what she thought of the Barbarella remake. She replied, "I try not to. Because I worry about what it’s going to be."

The original film was directed by Fonda's then-husband, Roger Vadim, and is about Barbarella, an adventurer sent into space in the 41st century to retrieve a scientist named Durand-Durand (Milo O'Shea), whose weapon could destroy the galaxy. It's based on the French comic of the same name.

The movie is filled with many sexual and campy situations, and as you might expect, Fonda became a huge sex symbol after Barbarella came out. It's unclear how someone would successfully adapt the storyline and character of Barbarella now.

Fonda mentioned in her interview that she had an idea for a sequel, but it never came to fruition: "I had an idea of how to do it that [original producer] Dino De Laurentiis, when he was still alive, wouldn’t listen to. But it could have been a truly feminist movie.”

It was announced in Oct. 2022 that Sweeney would star and executive produce the Barbarella remake with Sony Pictures, as reported by Deadline.

The movie is currently still in development, and there is no writer or director attached to the project yet. Neither Sweeney nor Sony Pictures have revealed any further details about the upcoming remake.
