Jane Fonda may have sworn off shopping last year, but that doesn't mean she's done with fashion for good. In fact, the 82-year-old has landed herself a new major campaign for Gucci's Off The Grid collection, which is part of the brand's new Gucci Circular Lines initiative, which supports more sustainable, circular production.
In the photos and short video clip, shot by by photographer and director Harmony Korine (yes, he of Kids and Spring Breakers fame), the actress and activist can be seen 'building' and posing in a treehouse alongside the likes of Lil Nas X, King Princess, Japanese musical artist Miyavi, and environmentalist David Mayer de Rothschild. The stars are dressed head-to-toe in genderless Gucci Off the Grid pieces, which, according to the press release, are made up of "recycled, organic, bio-based and sustainably sourced materials, including ECONYL, a regenerated nylon made from nylon offcuts and pre- and post-consumer waste."
The campaign was shot in LA prior to COVID-19 shutdowns and was conceived by Gucci's creative director, Alessandro Michele, who explained the thought process behind it and how it ties to environmental impact.
“The collection is the result of teamwork; everybody brought something to it," he said via an official statement. "And in the campaign, too, there is this idea of dialogue among people building something new. I imagined that we could build a treehouse in a city centre, all together, like kids playing in the park. Because all of us need to build this house or to find out that our planet exists, even where it seems it’s not there, or it’s far away.”
This push for a more sustainable Gucci is far from new. On top of banning fur in 2017, the fashion house also created a 10-year Culture of Purpose strategy, promising to reduce environmental impact, including greenhouse gas emissions, by 2025.
