Jamie O’Brien Surfs Massive Barrels in the Middle of Nowhere, Mexico

Mexico can be a fun place for a surfer. Jamie O’Brien knows this very well, and whenever he’s able, he’ll hop on a plane and head down south. He knows the place well — where to go when a swell of a particular direction shows up on a forecast — and he’s got the equipment to get himself into some seriously big barrels.

Not all of us have a PWC sitting around waiting for us in Mexico, but when you make a living filming yourself surfing waves most people wouldn’t, it helps. And when you’ve got the chance of jetting off to a deserted beachbreak with a few friends… well, you take it.

Even Jamie, though, with his well-traveled passport, isn’t immune to the whims of airline employees. While he was able to get his surfboards in, a few others were forced to pull the longer boards from the bag, sprint back to the car to drop them off, and haul ass back to the gate. All’s well that ends well, however, and they arrived safely with enough surfboards to go around.

The place Jamie went in Mexico isn’t explicitly stated (just “the middle of nowhere”) but the region, at least, should be fairly obvious. When surfing waves like the ones they do in the video above, a ski not only makes getting waves a hell of a lot easier, but it makes things a hell of a lot safer, too.

“We’re just trying to make sure we have a sled,” Jamie said, “so when things get heavy out there Kaikea [Elias] can save me and I can save Kaikea.”

Luckily, the sled wasn’t used for anything too traumatic. Instead, they just yanked themselves into waves that would be considered the best of a lifetime for most surfers. But it’s just another day for Jamie.
