  • Curtis now discounts her initial impression of de Armas and gives her glowing remarks for her major acting chops, and admitting to her initial prejudices.

Jamie Lee Curtis just got very candid about assumptions she made about former costar Ana de Armas prior to working together on Knives Out.

Curtis recalls her accounts of false first impressions when she first started working with de Armas in a new ELLE cover story. In the feature, Curtis remembers how she thought her Cuban-born co-star was an “unsophisticated young woman” before getting to know her.

“I assumed—and I say this with real embarrassment—because she had come from Cuba, that she had just arrived. I made an assumption that she was an inexperienced, unsophisticated young woman,” Curtis told ELLE. “That first day, I was like, ‘Oh, what are your dreams?’”

Although Curtis had made these initial assumptions, de Armas quickly made quite the impression on the veteran actress. Curtis told ELLE that she “was so impressed with de Armas that she wanted to introduce her to Steven Spielberg to play Maria in West Side Story or to [her] godchildren Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal.”

Embarrassed that she once held such inaccurate thoughts, Curtis now speaks very highly of her now-friend, de Armas. Delving into what de Armas is really like off-camera, Curtis tells ELLE that her friend in real life has a down-to-earth personality, but she’s not a complete Hollywood outsider either.

“She is not as fancy as maybe the advertisements would have you believe. She leans in, interested; talking to her is kind of give-and-take. She’s curious and asks a lot of questions,” Curtis says.

This isn’t the first time Curtis has given a glowing remark about de Armas since working together on their 2019 film. Back in February 2021, de Armas was named Time’s Time100 Next list and Curtis gave de Armas top marks for her major acting chops. She even recounted the moment that she knew that the actress had “unmistakable talent.”

Curtis has never shied away from growing as a person, having opened up in the past about overcoming her hidden battle with addiction. She’s also been vocal about how she’s overcoming her Hollywood sell-by date, and doubled down on pro-aging rhetoric to ensure women know just how important it is to lean into each passing year. In fact, she’s publicly slammed fillers, procedures saying they “conceal the reality of who we are.”

Curtis’ latest comments reveal that celebrities, like us, make mistakes in judging others by where they come from. Now, the 63-year-old is admitting to and apparently learning from, that error—an admirable thing to do.

We love Curtis’ and de Armas’ friendship and we can’t wait to see what the creative pair do next in their Hollywood journey!
