Jamie Lee Curtis, Lindsay Lohan to reunite for 'Freaky Friday' sequel: What we know so far

The dynamic duo that is Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are reuniting for a sequel to their 2003 version of "Freaky Friday."

Curtis, 64, teased a possible follow-up to the mother-daughter comedy during her awards show run for "Everything Everywhere All at Once" and "Halloween Ends" and announced it in a New York Times profile with Lohan, 36, on Wednesday.

Disney confirmed to USA TODAY that the film is in development.

"As I went around the world with 'Halloween Ends,' people wanted to know if there was going to be another 'Freaky Friday.' Something really touched a chord. When I came back, I called my friends at Disney and said, 'It feels like there’s a movie to be made,' " Curtis told the outlet.

Lohan added: "Jamie and I are both open to that, so we’re leaving it in the hands that be. We would only make something that people would absolutely adore."

Both stars are expected to reprise their roles as mom Tess Coleman (Curtis) and daughter Anna (Lohan).

What is 'Freaky Friday' about?

"Freaky Friday" is based on Mary Rodgers' 1972 novel of the same name. In Curtis and Lohan's 2003 movie, Tess struggles as a single mom raising her angsty teenage daughter Anna.

The mother-daughter duo's trip to a Chinese restaurant takes a turn after they receive cryptic fortunes. The following day, they discover they've switched bodies.

They both have to continue their lives in the other person's body, forcing them to see each other's lives through a different lens.

"'Freaky Friday' felt different because I was going through all of the phases of a 16-year-old (in real life)," Lohan recalled to the NYT. "This was the era of Avril Lavigne and punk, and I wanted to experience it. We did white stripes in my hair. I put (hair colorist) Tracy Cunningham through hell because I took my nice red hair and just bleached it."

Lohan, who is pregnant with her first child, told the NYT "Freaky Friday" taught her "to have more patience. You want to let them explore and live the way they need to live — with boundaries." The actress also added that her opinion may change in a year and in 16 years as she raises her baby.

Curtis, who shares daughters Annie and Ruby with her husband Christopher Guest, said the movie encouraged her to "suspend the judgment, open the ear, listen more."

It's unclear how the sequel will shape up, but Curtis joked with Entertainment Tonight in October that her character would have to be a grandmother. "And just watching Lindsay try to be a grandma makes me laugh, and then me being a grandma trying to take care of toddlers makes me laugh, so, I'm assuming it'll be something, or it won't be anything, we don't even know yet," she said.

How old was Lindsay Lohan in 'Freaky Friday?'

Lohan was 16 at the time "Freaky Friday" was released. This marked her continued success as a teenage actress, starring in "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" and "Mean Girls" the following year.

Curtis was 43 when "Freaky Friday" came out.
