When he's not telling jokes from behind The Late, Late Show desk and scream-singing with celebrities on Carpool Karaoke, James Corden is likely to be at home with his wife, Julia Carey, and their three children — Max, 9, Carey, 6, and Charlotte, 3.

Although James and Julia don't frequently update the press (or their social media followers) about their life together, we do know that the two first met back in 2009 at a charity function. Julia — who appeared in the '90s sitcom Wings and once reportedly worked as a TV producer — was involved with the non-profit Save the Children at the time.

Actor Dominic Cooper, James's good friend, was invited to one of the organization's events and convinced James to join him for a night out. “I said, ‘I’m really enjoying this sort of thing — like, cooking dinner, falling asleep, not really drinking,’" James recalled to People. “And he [Dominic] said, ‘Come on, let’s go, it’ll be fun.’ Thank God he persuaded me.”

Indeed. While there, Dominic introduced James to Julia. Right off the bat, James wasted no time telling his future wife how he felt.

“I said, ‘Hi, Jules. You might be the most beautiful woman in the world,’" James remembered. “She said, ‘Well, thank you very much. That sounds like something you say a lot.’ And I said, ‘I’ve never said it before in my life.’ That was it. That was it, really. I was in. And by an absolute miracle, so was she.”

An hour and a half later, James and Julia were off in a corner "jokingly" planning the rest of their lives together. They especially bonded over their love of quiet, uneventful nights.

“I remember saying to her, ‘Well, what about on Friday we could do nothing together? You could come over and we could just do nothing. And then maybe we could do nothing on the Saturday, and we could do nothing on the Sunday. And if our evenings are enough of nothing, then maybe this would become something,’" James told the outlet. “And she said, ‘That sounds like a fun idea.’”

The two began dating after that, and the rest is history. On Christmas day in December 2010, the comedian proposed to Julia, who was pregnant at the time. In March of 2011, they welcomed their son, Max, into the world. Shortly after, James and Julia tied the knot in September 2012 in Somerset, England. Years later, James and Julia had two daughters, Carey and Charlotte.

Today, the family of five lives in Los Angeles, where James continues to host The Late, Late Show. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, James, like many parents, has recently added homeschool teacher to his résumé.

"It's hard to know who's being homeschooled — whether it's me or my son," he joked during a recent virtual Ellen DeGeneres Show appearance. "I find myself going, 'Wow, I did not know that.'"

He later added: "I find myself — and this is deeply irresponsible — going, 'You know what, Max? Honestly, you're not gonna need any of this in life.'"

Jokes aside though, James once told People that fatherhood is actually "an amazing thing" and he "wouldn't have it any other way" in his life.

As for his wife, James made his deep affection for her known while accepting a Tony Award for his role in One Man, Two Guvnors in 2012: "She made me say ‘us’ instead of ‘I’ and ‘we’ instead of ‘me,’ and I love her."
