  • In his final week, he brought back a pair of fans who actually met on his show in 2015.

  • The couple's original wedding plans were undone by the pandemic, so Corden arranged for a star-studded reception on his show.

This week, James Corden is stepping away from The Late Late Show after eight years and nearly 1,200 episodes. When you've hosted a late night talk show for a while, and you're in the final lap, you wanna do something special.

Jimmy Fallon did his version of The Last Waltz with the Muppets when he left Late Night for The Tonight Show. Conan O'Brien wrapped up his Tonight Show stint by introducing late night television's greatest, most expensive character: the Bugatti Veyron Mouse. And of course, Jay Leno stepped away from The Tonight Show by ... kinda just hanging out in the 10 p.m. time slot until he could take his old gig back from O'Brien. (No word on whether the Bugatti Veyron Mouse is now in Leno's garage.)

Corden has been no stranger to controversy since he took over The Late Late Show, a situation that has snowballed in the last year or so. And perhaps it’s those recent dustups that are making Corden's final late night farewell more introspective and philanthropic than self-aggrandizing victory lap.

For example, Corden's team recalled a rarely-done segment from early in their show's run, "Sidewalk Soulmates," where the host would introduce two strangers on the sidewalk and invite them to his show on a "first date." While even avid fans of the show may forget this early bit, two people who didn't forget were Daniel and Evelyn, who were actually introduced as "Sidewalk Soulmates" thanks to the segment, and turned out to be real-life soulmates as well. They hit it off after the show, and even got engaged, intending to have a dream wedding in March of 2020.

You can guess how that turned out. But Corden and his team, in this final week of looking back, decided to make a delayed dream come true for Daniel and Evelyn. "You never had your big dream wedding reception," Corden said to the couple. "Why don’t we at The Late Late Show try and throw you a wedding reception in three minutes right here, right now?"

Corden and co. supplied a cake, champagne, decor, and even groomsmen for Daniel: the Jonas Brothers. The boy band did some charming banter about having just met the couple, including about how if Daniel and Evelyn ever do break-up, they can always reunite, for a tour or a new album. "It worked pretty good for us," Nick Jonas joked.

When the time came for the couple's "first dance," Evelyn said that their original plan was to dance to a Norah Jones song. Corden made that come true, too, bringing out the actual Jones to perform the title track off of her Grammy-winning 2002 album, Come Away With Me, in a moment Daniel and Evelyn will never forget.

So yes, James Corden has had his ups and downs, and you can dislike him for any number of reasons: his alleged rudeness, his mouse-costume L.A. street dancing, that time you saw The History Boys in 2006 and really couldn't track whether it was condoning certain behavior or not, or just all of whatever Cats was. But in this case, for whatever else has gone on, we've gotta hand it to him: this was a genuinely sweet and sentimental gift for a couple of regular folks who have been with him since the beginning of his late night run.
