Avatar director James Cameron thinks that if they were to do a re-release of the film, it would certainly surpass Avengers: Endgame's box office record from this summer.

Avengers: Endgame became the highest-grossing movie ever made, beating Cameron's blockbuster Avatar's success from 2009. Before his second masterpiece, Cameron stood at the top of the box office with Titanic.

But, according to Cameron, he could take over that all-time top slot again if they do another release of Avatar – something he says is "under discussion" with Disney (which now owns the series).

"I think it's a certainty," Cameron told USA Today about the possibility of Avatar becoming number one again.

"But let's give Endgame their moment and let's celebrate that people are going to the movie theater."

Over the summer, Cameron took to Avatar's social media pages to congratulate Marvel on their box office success, but the director thinks the movie came on top thanks to a "rounding error".

"I don't want to sound snarky after I took the high road [by offering congratulations]," he continued.

"But they beat us by one quarter of a percent. I did the math in my head while driving in this morning. I think accountants call that a rounding error."

In the same interview, Avatar's and Titanic's producer Jon Landau explained that if a re-release was given the green light by Disney, it will be purely to "service" the upcoming sequels.

"If [a re-release] can service the release of the sequels, then great," Landau said. "Our focus is on the sequels. "It's not about looking back, not trying to overtake."

Avatar 2 has a potential release date of December 17, 2021. Avengers: Endgame is out now on DVD, Blu-ray, 3D, 4K and digital download.
