Jameela Jamil Announces She’s Quitting Twitter…on Twitter

The Twitter exit (Twexit?? I’ll workshop it) has officially begun. ICYMI, but there’s literally no way you did, super-rich man Elon Musk bought the app for a measly ol’ $44 billion yesterday. Relatable! I hate buying a sandwich from the deli that costs $4, but go off, bestie! Naturally, the celebs and common folk alike who are not feeling this new ownership have decided to leave the app.

Actor Jameela Jamil seems to be among the first to lead the pack out. She announced yesterday that she was leaving the app…on the app, lol. “Ah he got Twitter,” she tweeted. “I would like this to be my what lies here as my last tweet. Just really *any* excuse to show pics of Barold. I fear this free speech bid is going to help this hell platform reach its final form of totally lawless hate, bigotry, and misogyny. Best of luck.”

TBH, between Jameela’s suuuper-cute puppy and royal blue eyeshadow, this is definitely how you mic drop on a platform you’re leaving. I would like to start a petition for her to stay though, just for more pics of Barold. But I guess that’s also why Instagram exists, so never mind!

Just a few hours before that tweet, Jameela gave her followers a lil heads-up on Monday that she would leave if Elon did indeed make the purchase. “One good thing about Elon buying Twitter is that I will *FINALLY* leave and stop being a complete menace to society on here. So it’s win-win for you all really.”

There is a lot of general distaste about this Twitter news because of Elon’s plans for the site, including taking it private and reinstituting the site’s original vision of being a space for free speech, which we know has a cost because the principle can be weaponized to incite hate in various forms. In a statement, Elon said, “Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated.”

We’ll see how this continues to shake out and whether or not more celebs follow Jameela’s lead!
