Jake Gyllenhaal took to Instagram to share some photos of his training regimen from Amazon’s upcoming remake of Road House. Doug Liman (Mr. & Mrs. Smith) directs the reimagining of the classic Patrick Swayze fight movie, which sees Gyllenhaal’s disgraced MMA fighter attempting to rescue a small town from a deranged Conor McGregor. The film, which also stars Jessica Williams (Booksmart) and Billy Magnussen (No Time to Die), was shot throughout 2023 in the Dominican Republic.

“We had an incredible crew on this film and an amazing team capturing images and video throughout our time in the DR! So much more to come,” Gyllenhaal promised in the post’s caption.

The first snap shows Gyllenhaal posing for a selfie with a group of stunt fighters who worked on the film’s strenuous action sequences. Subsequent shots show Gyllenhaal doing some quick exercises between scenes, squeezing in a few push-ups outside in the back of a soundstage; and doing boxing training. He’s also pictured submerged in a makeshift ice bath within what appears to be a storage crate. The final photo shows a ripped Gyllenhaal taking a rest on set while filming one of his MMA fights early on in the movie.

Though it certainly appears Gyllenhaal gave his all to ensure the fight scenes were realistic, original Road House star Marshall Teague isn’t so sure. Teague played a goon who was memorably relieved of his throat when battling Swayze. He said that “the hits sounded different” to him in the remake, noting that in the original he and Swayze “hit each other pretty hard throughout that fight, throughout the movie for that matter…We poleaxed each other, basically.”

2024’s Road House debuts on Prime Video on March 21. Check out the trailer below.
