Jade Hameister Responds to Internet Trolls by Making a Sandwich at the South Pole

Boom, roasted.

Jade Hameister has officially become the youngest person ever to pull off the "Polar Hat Trick" — aka visiting the North and South Poles as well as crossing Greenland — while on skis. And, as CNN reports, she managed to school some internet trolls in the process.

Here's how it all went down. After the 16-year-old led a TEDx Talk about her journey to the North Pole, she received several mean comments on YouTube from people telling her to "make me a sandwich" — a sexist phrase that is often used against women. Instead of letting the bullying get to her, Jade decided to actually make a sandwich — and then take it with her on her epic journey to the South Pole. "The camp we were staying at was less than a (kilometer) away from the actual pole, so we were like, 'Let's just do it," she explained to CNN, adding that her choice of clapback was well-received by the public. "There's been a lot of comments on it, which I didn't really expect, but I guess it's just kind of funny."

Jade presented her ham and cheese sandwich in a Facebook post, where she explained: "I skied back to the Pole again... to take this photo for all those men who commented 'Make me a sandwich' on my TEDX Talk." She then added the perfect punchline: "I made you a sandwich (ham & cheese), now ski 37 days and 600km to the South Pole and you can eat it." Boom.

In addition to her jab at her online trolls, Jade also wrote about her accomplishments, adding information about the South Pole as well. "We spent this morning cleaning out our sleds to be ready to fly out to Union Glacier tomorrow morning (depending on weather)," she posted. "Then we skied over to the Ceremonial South Pole (probably the Pole that everyone knows as the only South Pole — the barbers Pole with the flags) and the actual Geographic South Pole (which moves around 10m each year), which is marked separately."

As noted by CNN, Jade has a lot to be proud of. Her three-part journey began in April 2016, and she broke a number of records in the process. Not only is she the youngest person to complete the aforementioned Polar Hat Trick, she is also the youngest woman to ski unassisted across the Greenland icecap, and she's the first woman to travel through the Kansas Glacier near Antarctica via a new route. And the finishing touches of her journey happened during her summer vacation; she tells CNN that her future plans include finishing high school. Talk about an inspiration — and an entirely new way to get back at online bullies.
