Fang was 15-years-old which is old for a large dog like a Husky, and most Huskies live until they are 12-15 years old. It's so lovely that he lived such a long life, obviously filled with all the love he could want. Our heart goes out to the family because losing a pet is always so heartbreaking.

How To Care For a Dog Nearing His End of Life

If your own dog is a senior you will start to notice that they slow down quite a bit, enjoy napping on the sofa more than chasing a ball, and may exhibit signs of stiffness in their joints.

If your senior dog has had their yearly check-up with their veterinarian and they are healthy there are still ways you can help them make the most of the time they have left before they cross the rainbow bridge.

Adding stairs for the sofa or your bed can help them climb up easily, especially if they have stiff joints, and installing a doggy door can help if they have to go out frequently.

Senior dogs have different nutritional requirements than other life stages. For example, older dogs are less active so need fewer calories. Overfeeding leads to obesity which burdens aging joints and can lead to other health concerns.

Keep your dog active by taking them for walks at their own pace, but be careful of taking them out if the weather is very hot or very cold because older dogs tire more easily and are more prone to becoming cold.

You can also provide mental stimulation by giving them feeder puzzle toys and playing familiar games with them, like hiding one of their favorite stuffed animals.

It's always melancholy when you notice your dog is slowing down when they reach their senior age, but they still can have the most wonderful time with the time they have left. Enjoy every moment of it. We all know it goes by way too quickly.
