Jacksonville librarians to judge second poetry contest

JACKSONVILLE, Texas (KETK) – The Jacksonville Public Library will hold their second ever poetry contest on Saturday, May 25 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The contest will pit poets against each other in order to win praise and prizes from the librarians judging the planned poetic pugilism.

“All ages are welcome from 5th grade up,” said former creative writing teacher with Lon Morris College, Peter Hoheisel. “We will write a poem on the spot, and the librarians will judge the entry for prizes. I would especially like youngsters to come to compete against their parents. Also, people who have never written a poem before are my ideal contestants because they have no preconceived notions about what a poem is, except that it is a bunch of words which rhyme. We had a lot of fun last year and we hope to make it an annual event.”

Potential poets are prompted to provide their own pen. To learn more, contact the library at 903-586-7664 or 903-530-7873.
