Jackie Kennedy Had Specific Rules for the Secret Service Agents Looking Over Her Children

Not only was Jackie Kennedy well known for her iconic fashion and perseverance, but she was also known for being a very hands-on mother. We’ve seen many instances of her and her children going on trips together, playing together, and more, but a resurfaced post from People shines another light on how much the former First Lady did for her children, and did to ensure they were happy and safe.

Per People, Jackie Style author Pamela Keogh talked about how Jackie was an “extremely hands-on, very involved” mother. However, like many, she did have a nanny, but Jackie oversaw everything, and the nanny wasn’t the only member of the household helping out: so were the Secret Service agents assigned to Jackie and her kids.

“And though the Kennedy kids had every luxury at their disposal while living at the White House, it was important to Jackie that they remained “modest, humble and down-to-earth,” Keogh said to People. “They had to pick up their own clothing. She made sure that the Secret Service agents were not maids. The Secret Service agents could not fetch the children anything.”

This claim was backed up when Mrs. Kennedy and Me author and former Secret Service agent Clint Hill said Jackie “insisted on their children being respectful, acknowledging people and having good manners. But at the same time they wanted them to have a lot of fun and be happy.”

For those who don’t know, Jackie and John F. Kennedy had four children: Caroline, born in Nov 1957, John F. Jr, born in Nov 1960, Patrick Bouvier, born in Aug 1963, and Arabella, who was born in Aug 1956. Tragically, Patrick and Arabella died within days of being born, with Arabella being born stillborn. John F Jr died in 1999 after a plane crash took his life, along with his wife Carolyn Bessette and her sister Lauren.
