Jack Will Play a Major Part in Next Week’s Episode of ‘This Is Us’ Season 4

*Warning: Spoilers ahead*

On the last episode of This Is Us, we saw Randall (Sterling K. Brown) begin to crack under pressure, Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan) reach a compromise and Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) have a little fun. This week, we finally got to see what causes the long-awaited Randall and Kevin blowup—and it’s definitely not pretty.

At the top of This Is Us season four, episode 16, Randall tells Kate and Kevin that he found an experimental treatment that could help with Rebecca’s memory loss. The catch? It’s nine months in St. Louis. Randall wants to tell Rebecca right away, but Kevin begs him to let her have a fun time at his premiere (looking like a young Helen Mirren, we might add) before they make her decide. The night goes great until Rebecca has a moment of forgetfulness and Randall decides to go against Kevin’s wishes and tell her about the clinical trial.

When Kevin notices Randall telling their mom about the trial, he rushes over and calls his brother out. Rebecca gets overwhelmed and steps out for some air and Randall and Kevin take major digs at each other. When they go to find Rebecca, she’s gone but they know where to find her: The Met. They’re cordial in front of Rebecca but Randall and Kevin don’t make up.

Now that we know how the fight between Randall and Kevin started, we’re left to wonder how it’ll play out throughout the rest of the season. (Ahem, there are only two episodes left?!). In the season four, episode 17 teaser, however, we forget all about that because Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) is back in a major way.

Sadly, Jack is really dead and the producers haven’t been playing a sick joke on us for several seasons. But since Randall tells Kevin that he wonders all the time what life would be like if Jack was still alive, the This Is Us powers that be are graciously gifting us with an episode that does just that.

In the teaser, we see Jack opt out of going in to save the family dog in that tragic fire. We see him toast Randall and Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) at their wedding. He accompanies Randall to meet his birth father, William (Ron Cephas Jones), and gets to meet Kate’s son.

Even though none of it is real, we have a feeling we’re going to shed a couple of tears when This Is Us returns with the penultimate episode of the season next Tuesday, March 17, at 9 p.m. PT/ET on NBC.

Some other big take aways from this week’s episode:

  1. Kevin trying to set Rebecca up with his George Clooney-esque acting coach was quite a move.

  2. Watching Jack attempt to navigate New York while exceptionally lost gave us a good chuckle.

  3. Mandy Moore’s monologue in front of the painting at the Met was everything we love about this show.
