Whether I’m pan-roasting chicken breasts or cooking pasta in a creamy alfredo sauce for dinner, I tend to make more food than my three-person family can reasonably finish in one night. Sure, I want to make sure everyone eats their fill, but I also like to be able to make a quick plate for lunch the next day. And leftovers can be repurposed into all kinds of dishes, from salads to sandwiches—as long as they are stored properly.

The best food storage for leftovers that I have come across as someone who cooks dinner nearly every night are these Rubbermaid containers, and it’s not even close. Right now, you can grab a pack of three for just $7.

This set of three plastic Rubbermaid containers comes with two 3-cup and one 5-cup containers, and the wide base and roomy interior fits pretty much any dish you can imagine, even bulky dishes like meatballs or broccoli, or sliced up pork chops and roasted potatoes. The red lids are always easy to find, and feature vents so that they can be popped straight in the microwave.

I’ve been using this style of Rubbermaid container for more than five years, and I have tried other types of food storage, including quart containers and single use plastic baggies. But what I love most about these Rubbermaid containers is that they don’t degrade or warp—in fact, I’m still using my original set.

One of the most crucial factors when it comes to food storage containers, beyond them preserving my leftovers, is that they shouldn’t stain after multiple uses. These Rubbermaid containers check all the right boxes. The red lids snap onto the containers, creating a tight seal that keeps food fresh for two to three days longer than if I had merely stored them in Ziploc bags or plastic take-out containers.

And even though I use these containers at least four times per week for leftover dinners—which could be anything from steamed vegetables, to chicken piccata, to mac and cheese—they don’t retain the color or (more importantly) the aroma of whatever food was stored in there last. Even red pasta sauce doesn’t leave a greasy orange coating. Just some soap, warm water, and a quick scrub gets them clean every time.

Finally, they are easy to store.  The containers nest inside each other to create a neat stack, and if you decide to store them with the lids on, the bases and lids snap together so none of the pieces are misplaced.

I’ll probably never buy another brand of food storage container for leftovers. Rubbermaid makes the best version. At just $7 for a pack of three this is the one purchase your weeknight dinners will thank you for.
