As someone that once counted over one hundred red lipsticks in their possession (yep, that doesn’t even include nudes), it’s safe to say that I’ve tried my fair share of formulas. But nothing quite compared to the excitement I felt when legendary makeup artist, Lisa Eldridge, announced that she was launching her own makeup brand back in 2018, and that she was starting with lipsticks, no less. I was as excited as a retriever pup, to say the least.

As mentioned, I own enough lipsticks to drown in, so to stand out from the crowd takes a lot. Although it took me a few go’s to finally get ahold of one of Lisa’s iconic Velvet lipsticks (the first few drops were harder to get that Glasto tickets), as soon as I applied the buttery formula to my lips, I knew they lived up to the hype and have become my go-to ever since.

It’s been a few years since the initial launch and (thankfully) there are a few more shades for me to play with, too. Yet the formula really has stood up against others that have come since and remain my favourite lipsticks to date.

If you could get a masters in lipsticks, I would have got a first, so for me to be exclusive to one formula says a lot. As the name suggests, the end result really does leave me looking like I’ve stuck some velvet on to my lips with PVA glue (can confirm, I didn’t have to go full Art Attack to achieve this look). Because of said finish, it creates an almost blurry effect, which works wonders if you need a little help in the over lining department (hi, hello, me).

The darker shades are my personal faves, and unlike a lot that I’ve tried and tested, these really do only take one swipe to get the exact colour payoff you see from the lipstick itself. Over time, I have grown particularly fond of the shade ‘Strawberry Shock’, doing what it said on the tin and shocking me with how much I love this watermelon-margarita-esque shade. As someone as pale as I am, coral is a no-go under normal circumstances, but Lisa has managed to make this oh-so wearable.

That being said, the darker shades in particular don’t evenly fade (I’d always opt for a liquid formula if that’s what you’re after), but they don’t leave my lips feeling as dry and dehydrated as cotton after cleansing off either – no small miracle.

I'm also not the only fangirl these lipsticks have; Dua Lipa has stepped out with the warm-toned brown shade 'Meet Me in Berlin' that *screams 90s* and everyone from Zoe Saldana to Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has worn the iconic 'Ribbon' shade.

Luckily, Lisa’s brand has since grown and it’s far easier to get ahold of these little cases of gold; just take a trip to Selfridges and you’ll be in matte-lip-galore. Just don't cry too much when you ruin the almost fuzzy-bear-looking exterior. Art, I tell you.
