On Trial: Avocado Green Mattress with Attached Pillow-Top
The Tester: Katie Pittman — an associate editor and side sleeper who was tired of waking up sweaty and achy.
The Brief: After years of sleeping on a hand-me-down mattress from a college friend, I decided it was time to go on the hunt for a larger, cooler, more supportive, and sustainably-made mattress — which led me to the Avocado Green Mattress. I had been researching the brand for months, but like so many other mattresses, investing in a new one comes at a hefty price tag. When I was able to connect with the brand about testing a mattress, I didn't have to think twice about it.
As someone who often sleeps on my side or stomach, I knew I needed something that wasn't going to sink in when I rolled over or changed positions. I also knew that I couldn't stand waking up drenched in sweat for much longer (I'm blaming my hot nights on the non-breathable memory foam topper I had on my old bed).
From the moment I discovered the Avocado Green Mattress, it ticked off all the requirements I had on my list: It’s firm but still has some give. It’s made from 100% GOTS organic cotton and wool, so it wicks away sweat and heat, and it’s sustainably made in the USA.
After years of sleeping on a mattress that practically swallowed me whole, I knew I needed something more firm. The Avocado Green Mattress ranks itself as a 7/10 on the firmness scale without the pillow-top, so I opted to add it for just a little more cushion when I hit the hay (it ranks a 6/10 on firmness).
I suffer from chronic lower back pain from a former injury, so I was most excited to finally have the support I needed to get a good night's sleep. I also live in an apartment that has radiator heat and no central air conditioning (i.e., it's hot all year long), so I needed something that would keep me cool and sweat-free.
After just one night's sleep, I knew this was the exact type of mattress I've been dreaming about (literally). The base of the Green mattress is made from extremely supportive steel coils that are individually wrapped in fabric to eliminate that dreaded squeaky most traditional mattresses make. Plus, each coil moves independently of one another, so the contours of your body are better supported, and there's less motion transfer if you share a bed with someone else, which I believe has been the key to my good night's sleep.
Atop the springs sits a 3-inch layer of organic latex foam, which adds a soft, almost memory-foam like feel. I opted to add a “pillow-top” to my mattress, which is an additional 2 inches of foam, for a grand total of 5 inches. The pillow-top is attached to the mattress by hand-tufted rosettes, which look amazing and adds to the thoughtful design of the bed. Another perk? Zero adhesives are used to create the mattress, which means fewer chemicals are present.
Other design factors include heavy-duty handles on both sides of the bed, which make it easier to lift and rotate the mattress. But you should never have to turn the mattress upside down — simply just rotate it every now and again to ensure even wear, just as you would any mattress.
When it comes to actually getting the mattress in your house, you have two options: You can have it shipped to you for free through FedEx, or you can shell out $249 for white-glove delivery. My advice? Pay for the delivery. The mattress itself arrives folded into a slim box, similar to companies like Casper, but it weighs well over 200 pounds. If you live alone (like me), it's not worth the struggle to haul it up your stairs and into your bedroom by yourself. Plus, if you choose white-glove delivery, they'll also set up your bed for you, take away the trash, and even take your old mattress away to recycle if you wish.
I was also able to try the City Bed Frame, a sleek, low-to-the-ground design that the brand recently released. Living in New York, I was a little nervous about going for a platform bed, as underbed storage is precious, precious space. Thankfully, I was still able to fit my storage bins under the frame since there's about 6 inches of clearance space underneath the frame.
The brand's adjustable-fill pillows are pretty life-changing, too. The stuffing is made from shredded latex and kapok, a silky, cotton-like fiber, which you can add or take away from to create your ideal pillow firmness. For me, I need something a little more substantial for my side sleeping, but my partner loves how the soft pillow cradles his head at night. I was surprised just how much stuffing came with each pillow, but I'm so glad it did — it made adjusting the firmness a breeze.
Closing Argument: It only took me a couple nights’ sleep to realize why the Avocado Green Mattress was so highly praised. The bed improved my quality of sleep by leaps and bounds, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for an eco-friendly mattress that's comfortable and cooling.
The mattress's pricing starts off at $1,099 for a twin (without the pillow-top) and is custom-made to order entirely from organic materials. It's available in sizes twin through California king, all of which are available with financing options. And get this — if you want to test it for yourself, there's a 1-year trial period, so you can sleep on it for 365 days before making a final decision if you so wish. All of Avocado's mattresses are backed with a 25-year warranty, too.
Avocado also offers a vegan mattress (made without wool), a latex mattress (without springs), a vegan latex mattress (without springs and wool), and a luxury plush mattress (which is softer than the original Green mattress and has 21 layers of latex, alpaca, wool, mohair, silk, and flax fibers atop the springs). There's an Avocado mattress for everyone, and thanks to my vastly improved sleep cycles, I couldn't recommend investing in one more.
