Issa Rae's "Insecure" Gets New App Game From HBO, Glow Up Games

As if Insecure season 4 debuting in April wasn’t exciting enough, there’s even more good news about getting more doses of Issa Rae's HBO show. Glow Up Games, a new creative tech studio with a founding team comprised of all women of color, partnered with HBO to debut a free-to-play mobile game titled Insecure: The Come Up Game.

The game, first reported on by Wired, will tie in with Insecure season 4, with new content and features added monthly. The initial release involves players being able to create their own raps in front of the mirror and share them amongst friends: you literally get to become your own version of Issa.

"We're huge fans of Insecure, and one thing that I particularly love about the show is how messy and relatable Issa is as a character — we don't see enough of that kind of storytelling nuance in games,” Mitu Khandaker, CEO of Glow Up, tells Teen Vogue. “And that's not even counting the enormous issue of representation in games. So, we were super excited for the opportunity to create Insecure: The Come Up Game, because it's time that games did things differently and lifted up more black and brown women — as both playable characters, and behind the scenes, as developers."

Let’s be real—how many times during an episode have you thought to yourself, "I absolutely need Kellie, Molly, Tiffany, and Issa herself as my friends?" Well, after downloading the game, players will receive updates including new storylines about those characters, as well as Lawrence and Chad too.

In addition to being able to hone in on your inner rap star potential, Insecure: The Come Up Game, will also let players design their own virtual lives with hundreds of options of hair, clothes, and accessories. You can also unlock dozens of L.A. locations and create an impact on your local community.

The Come Up Game is a perfect, natural extension of Insecure. I’m so excited to give our viewers a chance to explore Issa Dee’s world,” said Insecure star and creator Issa Rae in a statement. “The Glow Up Games team has been amazing to work with and it was such a rewarding experience to create this game alongside an all women of color-led team.”

Get ready to run L.A. because Insecure: The Come Up Game will be available on the App store and Google Play before you know it — the game is set for release in 2020.
