Hanging art on your walls is an essential step in the decorating process, but there's another surface that deserves just as much attention: your floors. We're not suggesting you walk all over your art, we're just taking a note from artist and interior designer Michel Smith Boyd's book and treating rugs like art for your floors. His recent exclusive rug collection for ZGallerie bring serious style to the ground we walk on. Featuring mod shapes and bold colors, his modern renditions of heirloom rugs mark the first introduction of exclusive designs that expand beyond Z Gallerie’s curated collection of Boyd’s art.

"My style is luxurious but approachable. It's always rooted in fashion, and I take my cues from art and travel," says Boyd of the line. "These designs are just that: every day, an elevated luxury that you can live in." As far as designers he's most inspired by, Boyd quickly and emphatically refers to Yves Saint Laurent, who he describes as "a trailblazer in fashion, creating new ways of thinking as he was creating new designs. Heavily influenced by modern art and jaw-dropping muses, he could literally turn a feeling into a garment. This idea that the design is just part of the larger idea of lifestyle has stuck with me, and I'm always looking to Mr. Laurent for inspiration," he says.

Beyond Saint Laurent, Boyd also says that African textiles, Parisian interiors, and Schiaparelli's collections are frequent appearances on his vision board. "I'm attracted to the African textiles' boldness, Schiaparelli's material selections/execution, and the well-edited refinement of Parisian homes," he tells House Beautiful. "Those elements strike the chord I'm attempting to achieve in all my work."

Boyd's ZGallerie design collection brings this stylistic attitude to an element that's sometimes overlooked—but supremely important in design. "Rugs are grounding and help delineate areas for multiple functions and moods, otherwise your furniture is just floating," explains the designer. "If the floor is the ocean, rugs are the islands. My sincere hope is that these rugs will bring a sense of approachable luxury into your home and to create an island for everyone."

The collection of five rugs launches online on 5/13 and in retail stores starting 5/21 with prices ranging from $599 to $1599.
