Iron Flame Spoilers: What Happens To Violet & Xaden?

Obviously! Spoilers ahead for Iron Flame. The follow-up to Rebecca Yarros’ bestselling roman-tasy epic Fourth Wing was released on November 7, 2023, but the rollout to bookstores left a few fans disappointed. So, if you’re too impatient and you want Iron Flame spoilers, we got you (obviously read at your own peril).

Iron Flame is the second book in the Empyrean series with Violet Sorrengail at the heart of the story. Unlike many fantasy heroes who are considered physical specimens, Violette suffers from dizziness, brittle bones and joints that easily dislocate. “I read fantasy growing up and I never saw that, I saw these powerful heroines,” Yarros told the New York Times. “I wanted to tell a story about a girl who should not succeed, and who should not be able to endure an overly brutal environment. … Writing Violet is super cathartic, because she struggles to accept the accommodations that are given to her, and I have that same struggle.”

Fourth Wing, the first book in the series, introduced us to Violette and recruits of aspiring elites known as Navarre or dragon riders. A high-risk pursuit, cadets either graduate or die and everyone is out for themselves. The book left readers on one hell of a cliffhanger when someone we thought was dead emerges from the shadows.

The official synopsis for Iron Flame is as follows: “Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College—Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Although Violet’s body might be weaker than everyone else’s, she still has her wits—and a will of iron. And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: Dragon riders make their own rules. But a determination to survive won’t be enough this year. Because Violet knows the real secret hidden for centuries at Basgiath War College—and nothing, not even dragon fire, may be enough to save them in the end.” Can’t wait for the book to be delivered? Here are some Iron Flame spoilers to whet your appetite.

Here’s a running list of spoilers

Iron Flame spoiler 1: Andarna has grown up into…

In chapters 1 through 4, TikTok user @kaelasbooked revealed that Andarna—the cute golden baby dragon from Fourth Wing who serves as Violet’s second bonded dragon—is all grown up (well, she’s a teenager at least) AND she’s a black dragon, making her among the rarest and most powerful. What does that mean for Violet and the power she’ll get from it? As a lightning wielder, Violet possesses a highly potent signet already. She has two now, with Tairn, so it will be interesting to see where this goes into the next books.

Iron Flame spoiler 2: The opening page

On the opening page of the book, it’s been revealed there’s a content warning that reads: “Iron Flame is a nonstop-thrilling adventure fantasy set in the brutal and competitive world of a military college for dragon riders, which includes elements regarding war, psychological and physical torture, imprisonment, intense violence, brutal injuries, perilous situations, blood, dismemberment, burning, murder, death, animal death, graphic language, loss of family, grief, and sexual activities that are shown on the page. Readers who may be sensitive to these elements, please take note, and prepare to join the revolution.”

What does this mean? Who is getting tortured? One fan revealed that Violet gets tortured by being told to lightning strike again and again until she keels over, but we’re not exactly sure where this happens in the book.

Iron Flame spoiler 3: Other Man/Other Woman drama

In a Reddit thread, one reader asked if there was “OW/OM drama”, meaning other woman, other man. It describes a story arc where another woman / other man threatens the happily ever after ending to the romance of protagonists. A fan replies: “OW but it’s not too bad”. From trawling through Reddit threads, it seems a character called Catriona might pose a threat to Xaden and Violet’s romance.
