The feature produces several soothing sounds that so many of us turn to when we need to feel calm, from standard white noise (which is particularly helpful for sleep, reports Sleep Foundation) to ocean waves and rainfall.

This secret function, called background sounds, comes in handy when you don't have access to your noise machine (so, when you travel!) or if you don't want to buy a standalone device for sleep or stress relief. So long as you have an iPhone 6S and run iOS15 or higher, this feature is available to you. Here's how to turn on background sounds when you need them:

  1. Go to settings

  2. Click accessibility

  3. Click audio/visual

  4. Toggle on background sounds

  5. Choose your preferred sound and volume
