Inventive stretcher easily transforms into a light-weight wheelchair
This multi-purpose stretcher transforms into a wheelchair in seconds to help paramedics easily accommodate a wider variety of patients.
The “Multi Scoop Pro,” a scoop stretcher designed by Netherlands-based company Studio Rotor for Retter Helfer Medical, was created to give emergency personnel an easier way to transport patients with “light” injuries, without having an additional device take up more space in the back of an ambulance.
When folded flat, the 22-pound device is as thin as a regular scoop stretcher — a device that pulls apart and can be used to “scoop” up severely injured patients from the ground — allowing it to easily fit into existing ambulance compartments.

With just a few readjustments, the Multi Scoop Pro transforms into a light-weight wheelchair, which is perfect for transporting patients whose injuries do not warrant a stretcher.
The idea for the Multi Scoop Pro emerged as the result of broad and extensive research on the working methods of ambulance personnel in the Netherlands.
“In our research, it became clear that traditional manual stretchers in ambulances were more and more replaced by electrical stretchers,” said a press release for the device. “But often, paramedics seem to leave these heavy powered stretchers (60 kg and up) in the ambulance, because most of their patients are still quite mobile. In those cases, the paramedics need to carry all their equipment (to the patient).”
“Also, the research showed that literally every ambulance contains a scoop stretcher,” it added. “The combination of a scoop stretcher with a lightweight wheelchair proved to be the most promising direction.”
