Today is the first day of fashion month, the four weeks in which the Spring 2019 collections are shown in New York, London, Milan, and Paris. In the pursuit of new names, new faces, and new directions, all eyes will be trained on the runways (watching IRL or digitally) but even more so on the sidewalks outside the venues. For the fashion obsessed, street style is perhaps the most compelling arena in which to see clothes and the ideas that give rise to them in action. Let’s face it: There’s nothing better than catching a glimpse of a trend before it hits the catwalk.

With that in mind, we bring you our 100 favorite street style stars, from Lagos to Los Angeles, Cameroon to Chicago, Beijing to Brooklyn. With honesty, humility, and lashings of sly humor, they reveal in stories, slideshows, and videos the secrets of their remarkable, directional, culturally code-breaking aesthetics. There is a Chinese performance artist who dons eco-fashion ball gowns and a Copenhagen shopgirl who cycles to work in head-to-toe pastels. There is a pair of Kenyan designers who customize tailored suiting with shells and feathers and an Italian artist who revels in “Trash/Fash.” Every person chronicled here is a curator, collector, and gifted creator . . . and they come in all ages, sizes, and from everywhere.

Only a very few of the people profiled here are connected directly to the fashion industry in its most established form. You will not see many of them standing outside the shows, preening for the camera. This is street style in the truest sense: people who woke up in the morning, got dressed, and blessed the world with their dazzle and direction. Prepare to be amazed.
