In a world of endless remakes, reboots, and spin-offs, it’s hard to hype yourself up about something you feel like you’ve already seen. I mean, why mess with a good thing, right? Sometimes bringing back old characters and tapping into nostalgia just feels like a cash grab.

Interview with the Vampire–the 1994 film based on the famous 1976 novel of the same name–had a stellar cast in Christian Slater, Kirsten Dunst, Tom Cruise, and Brad Pitt. It received two Oscar nominations and jumpstarted Dunst’s career. While the film’s sequel did poorly, the original is considered a commercial and critical success. And yet, not only is there now a new attempt at Interview with a Vampire, but it’s slightly different in its approach (in a good way).

The contemporary remake changes the character of Louis de Pointe du Lac. Originally a plantation owner, Louis (played by Game of Thrones' Jacob Anderson) is now a Black man who’s made his money through owning brothels. And while the 1994 film has little overt queerness, the new television show makes it clear Louis and Lestat (Sam Reid) are in a romantic relationship. Through these critical changes, the show becomes a meditation on race, sexuality, and class in a way the 1994 film was not. And if the critics' Rotten Tomatoes score means anything (the show is at 98%), the new Interview with a Vampire is a smashing success. Plus, there’s no need to watch the 1994 film beforehand; it’s a whole new version of Anne Rice’s work.

Here’s how you can watch it.
