Internet Shocked That Keanu Reeves, 55, Might Be Dating an Age-Appropriate Woman

It’s rare to see Keanu Reeves—aka the internet’s boyfriend—engaging in PDA, let alone PDA on a red carpet. So it’s understandable that people were pleasantly surprised when he appeared at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art Art + Film Gala this week holding hands with artist Alexandra Grant. Naturally, the rumored relationship instantly got the internet buzzing, with many expressing their joy that Reeves seems to have found love with someone.

It turns out Reeves and Grant have known each other for several years now. The two collaborated on an illustrated book titled Ode to Happiness back in 2011; in 2017 they created a small press called X Artists’ Books.

But the main focus of the conversation about Reeves and Grant wasn’t her accomplishments or his dating history. Rather, people immediately honed in on Grant’s hair, which she wears naturally gray, and her age in comparison to Reeves’s (she’s 46 he’s 55.) And this being the internet, the whole thing has started a strange discussion on Twitter.

It’s already unsettling that people focused so much on Grant’s physical appearance, but some Twitter users were flat-out gross, saying the accomplished artist and philanthropist looked like Reeves’ “grandma” and wondering why she doesn’t dye her hair.

Even more people—thank God—celebrated Grant’s hair. “Of course Keanu loves a woman who doesn’t conform to ageist pressures to dye silver hair,” one person wrote on Twitter. “Alexandra Grant is awesome & I bet plenty of women over 40 are looking at her photos & thinking that maybe they’re also done with dyeing their hair now too (nicely done, Keanu Reeves, but this is the level of basic human goodness I’ve come to expect from you),” someone else said.

Others just seemed relieved that Reeves was dating someone relatively close to his age, considering the ongoing stereotype that male celebrities always partner up with much younger women. (See Leonardo DiCaprio, 44, and his 22-year-old girlfriend, Camila Morrone; Dennis Quaid, 65, and his 26-year-old fiancé, Laura Savoie.)

The point is, it says a lot about where we are at as a society that so many people are fascinated by an over-50 actor dating a woman in her 40s who wears her naturally. So here’s hoping the next time it happens—and we believe it will—it won’t be seen as such an outlier.
