Prince William and Kate Middleton inherited the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales on Friday.

Prince William and Kate Middleton have officially assumed the inherited titles of Prince and Princess of Wales, making Kate the first to be honored with the title since the late Princess Diana

The news of Kate's new title began trending on Twitter on Friday after King Charles III announced that William, 40, and Kate, 40—formerly known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge—would now become the Prince and Princess of Wales following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday, Sept. 8.

People on social media seemed to have mixed reactions to the news, with many fans celebrating Kate's new role in the royal family, while others took the opportunity to instead remember Diana, who assumed the role of Princess of Wales before her tragic death in 1997.

"Introducing Her Royal Highness Catherine Princess of Wales," one Twitter user wrote, alongside a stunning black-and-white photo of Kate.

"So proud to have a new Princess of Wales! She will do the role so much justice, what an amazing woman," another person wrote.

But some fans weren't as pleased to see the royal title adopted by someone other than the late Diana.

"To the woman who made the Princess of Wales title iconic! There can never be another!" one fan wrote alongside a photo of Diana. "Long live Princess Diana."

"There's only one Princess of Wales to me and that will always and forever be Princess Diana," another chimed in.

Other users considered the news to be perfect timing, with one account calling it "fitting that 25 years on from Princess Diana's death, we have another Princess of Wales to cherish again."

Despite the public's mixed feelings regarding the history of the title, a royal source claimed that William and Kate "will approach their roles in the modest and humble way they've approached their work previously," according to Hello Magazine

"Kate, as the new Princess of Wales, is acutely aware of Princess Diana's history with the title, but is looking forward to creating her own path in the role."

During Charles' first speech as King on Friday, he also named his wife, Camilla, as the new Queen Consort

"I know she will bring to the demands of her new role the steadfast devotion to duty on which I have come to rely so much," he stated.

Camilla—who His Majesty married following his divorce from Diana—was previously known as the Duchess of Cornwall and never assumed the title of Princess of Wales because of its strong association with Diana.
