Oh, the 90s. How we love that decade. Not only was it a time for angel hair pasta dinners and Pepperoni Pizza Rolls but it was a time of grunge music, starter jackets, and some great holiday movies, like one of our all-time favorites, "Home Alone".

But the 90s were also a time when groceries (and nearly everything else) cost a whole lot less than what we are paying now. That's certainly what one particular scene in the classic Christmastime movie "Home Alone" proved, and would explain why the movie is having a bit of a viral moment this week, despite being over 30 years old. Here's why.

How Grocery Prices Compare to the 'Home Alone' 1990s Grocery Haul

A recent series of TikTok videos on "Home Alone"—specifically the scene where an abandoned Kevin McCallister goes grocery shopping—has been going viral, with commenters shocked and angered in the comments. Why? The user broke down the grocery costs in the 1990s and compared it with today’s average prices. The results were pretty hard to swallow.

The video showcased the snippet of the movie when we see Kevin picking up a sizable grocery haul that includes a gallon of milk, a loaf of bread, orange juice, and toilet paper, just to name a few items. As we see on screen, the entire grocery haul costs him only $19.83. Today, according to that TikTok user, the same items would cost a whopping $63.73.

We all know groceries cost a lot more these days thanks to inflation, but seeing it side-by-side like this makes it even more real. No wonder we’re always on the hunt for deals on our everyday items.

Thankfully, not all retailers are making us shell out the big bucks for our groceries. Aldi is known for its low prices, even when compared to the 1990s. Sure, if Kevin were to shop at Aldi today, he’d spend more than $19.83, but it wouldn’t cost over three times that, either. Let’s break it down a bit.

In the movie, Kevin bought the following items:

  • Half-gallon of milk

  • Wrappit! Plastic wrap

  • Stouffer’s Frozen Turkey Dinner

  • Snuggle dryer sheets

  • Wonder Bread

  • 4-pack of Quilted Northern toilet paper

  • Kraft Macaroni and Cheese

  • Plastic army figurines

  • Tide liquid laundry detergent

  • Half-gallon of Tropicana orange juice

If we were to purchase comparable items today at Aldi, choosing the store’s own private label equivalents, the prices would be as follows:

  • Simply Nature Organic 2% Milk - $3.79

  • Boulder Plastic Wrap – 200 ft - $1.95

  • Bremer Frozen Chicken Pot Pie - $0.99

  • Tandil Fabric Softener Sheets - $2.29

  • L'oven Fresh White Bread - $1.29

  • Willow 12-Roll 1000-Sheet Toilet Paper - $8.29

  • Cheese Club Macaroni and Cheese Dinner - $0.57

  • Fisher-Price Little People Figures (11/29 ALDI Find) - $4.99

  • Tandil Fresh Essentials Liquid Laundry Detergent - $6.49

  • Nature's Nectar Not from Concentrate Orange Juice with No Pulp - $3.29

The grand total for Kevin’s 2023 haul at Aldi is $33.94, making it just about 47% less than if shopping for these items at other grocery stores. It just goes to show, despite inflation, some stores are still out there helping us save some serious cash. And you can even keep the change, ya filthy animal.
