It wouldn’t be a Beyoncé celebration without a special gift to her fans. The superstar, who rang in her birthday earlier this month, updated her website last night with an image retrospective titled “Your B at 37.” Complete with never before seen throwback images and glimpses of the most important people in her life, it was an intimate window into a banner year for the musician and actress. Among the photos of her twins Sir and Rumi, as well as a peek into her family’s recent getaway to Sardinia, Beyonce included a nod to several of her personal style icons. While her inspired 2018 Halloween tributes to Florence Griffith Joyner and Toni Braxton were already well known, she also shared previously unreleased shots of herself dressed as another throwback style icon: Lisa Bonet.

The bohemian looks Bonet brought to the red carpet in the ’80s and ’90s inspired an entire generation of celebrities to embrace their individualism, which Beyonce paid homage to by offering her own twist on two of the actress’s now-classic outfits; namely her fringed crop top from the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards, and the deconstructed lace dress she debuted at 1988 celebration for her Rolling Stone Hot List cover. Accompanied by then-husband Lenny Kravitz at both events, Bonet foreshadowed several of 2019’s dominant trends with her teensy sunglasses, statement hat, and vintage sourced wardrobe.

Naturally, Beyonce’s versions, designed by Alejandro Collection, were identical, down to the nose ring and luxurious mane of jet black curls. Joined in the photos by Sir and Rumi—both of whom were dressed in kente cloth playsuits, akin to the one worn by an infant Zoe Kravitz at an Our Common Future event in 1989—she created yet another series of instantly iconic images. Already viral thanks to the diligence of the BeyHive, the photos are a prime example of the magic that can happen when one style superstar salutes another.
