Internet Is Convinced Limited-Edition Pepsi Flavor Is an April Fools’ Joke: ‘Drop It in a Rubbish Bin’

Food lovers who enjoy soda and breakfast food are certain a new collaboration between Pepsi and IHOP must be an April Fools’ Day joke—however, food bloggers insist it’s the real deal.

In a March 28 Instagram post, Pepsi shared an image of a cola-filled glass emblazoned with the soda company’s logo as the phrase “YOU HAD ME AT Pancakes” hovered above. Beside the logo on the liquid-filled glass was an image of a stack of butter-topped and syrup-covered pancakes.

“Bet you didn’t think our love could get any sweeter! Stay tuned for a new sweet treat only available for the month of April,” Pepsi wrote in its caption accompanying the image. The soda brand tagged IHOP in the photo, which the breakfast food chain also shared on its own Instagram account.

So what exactly will come of this new collaboration? According to food bloggers Snackolator and Markie Devo, Pepsi and IHOP are brewing a maple syrup-flavored beverage that will be available in soda and float form. The new drinks will be available through April exclusively at IHOP.

Most people weighing in on the proposed beverages were unconvinced it would be worth trying—if it was even real. One fan directly addressed the new drink’s April 1 launch, writing, “Is it another April fool's day with this,” while another asked, “April 1? Are we sure this is real?”

Another Instagram user suggested the new flavor sounded like a joke as they recalled an episode of The Simpsons in which Homer Simpson purchased a similar syrup-flavored soda. Several others wondered about how the new drink was made. “[I] hope it’s not just regular pepsi with them just adding maple syrup,” one person worried.

“They can drop it in the rubbish bin,” another person declared.

But not everyone was convinced that the syrup-flavored Pepsi would be a flop. Some people expressed an eagerness to taste test the new soda, while others said the reverse collaboration should also be available for IHOP customers.

“Could the pancake of the month also be Pepsi flavored?” one person suggested.
