The internet cannot handle this video of a starfish walking, and same

Sea creatures are fascinating. And today, we learned a lot about starfish. Have you ever wondered how starfish walk? Though they may appear to have five limbs, they actually have thousands of cilia on the underside of their bodies, which help them get from Point A to Point B. So, nope, they don’t walk like Patrick does in SpongeBob SquarePants.

You may know that starfish can regenerate limbs, but did you know they can’t see color? They have an eye at the end of each arm, but cannot tell what color that fellow sea creature is swimming toward them. Plus, news alert: Starfish are not actually fish! According to National Geographic, they’re echinoderms, a.k.a. closely related to sea urchins and sand dollars.

Some scientists are even trying to rename “starfish” to “sea star” as a result of the confusing verbiage.

Now that you’ve been debriefed about the sea star, have you ever seen one walk?!

Neither had we…until now. Check out this video and prepare to be mesmerized. As of this writing, the tweet has been liked over 139,000 times and retweeted more than 79,000 times.

Some thought the starfish was cute…

…though others were confused.

Some people were scared…

…and some were downright terrified.

Others thought the walking starfish looked more like an alien than a sea creature.

One person even sped up the video, so it looks like the starfish is dancing.

And many people hoped the starfish was put back into the water, a.k.a. its home. We’re hoping so, too!

We hope the starfish is back home safely in the ocean since starfish primarily do need marine water to survive. As UCSB ScienceLine states, many starfish live underwater all the time, though some live in inter-tidal zones. Meaning, when the tide is low, they may hang out waiting for the next tide. The important thing is that they stay pretty wet since they breathe through their gills and use water to move their feet.

As fascinating as it was to see the starfish walking, we hope he’s doing so happily back at home underwater now.
