Interior RTW Fall 2023

Lily Miesmer and Jack Miner’s Interior journeyed to a version of old New York for fall. But not the kind of pleasant, vintage New York that usually serves as inspiration for designers, like showgirls on Broadway.

Instead, they chose to explore the theme of “down and out” in New York — a tableau of decrepit scenes in the underbelly of Times Square. In Miesmer’s mind, this season was a fashion narrative on someone wandering around hokey Midtown establishments in their saddest state — perhaps immediately after a breakup or other unfortunate event.

“[It’s] the idea of New York being a very sad stage for a very sad moment in someone’s life. You can’t get much lonelier than Times Square at 3 a.m. on a Saturday,” she said.

So how does this translate to clothes? “For fall, we leaned even further into spring 2023’s exploration of chaos versus control. The coats are falling apart. The hems are dragging. The simple poplin dress hides a punishing corset and layers of canvas. We keep our collections very tight and I love to see the Interior voice getting sharper without the collection becoming unwieldy,” Miesmer said.

It’s true that this season’s Interior collection had a smaller range of designs on offer — a narrowed edit of cherry “McDonald’s red” suiting, bright white lace separates, a teddy bear fur and select netted evening dresses for which they’ve become known.

Miesmer and Miner continued their thread of deconstruction with a coat slashed in selective places and hems that are intended to fray with age. “We love things that look like they’re absolutely not going to work but somehow do. I guess it’s a flex,” she said.
