Contrary to popular opinion, the best couches aren’t always the biggest or the most expensive. No, they’re the ones that make you feel most at ease when you spread out across them and are ones that look best in your space. Sometimes, they can be a bit on the pricier side, and sometimes, they can fit a whole lot of people, but they’re not restrictive by any means. So, if you’re on the hunt for a new sofa, you’ve come to the right place. Ahead, we’re offering a comprehensive list of what we’d consider to be the best ones on the market right now. In fact, some of them are even in our own homes. As for the rest of them, they come highly regarded by our lifelong friend: Internet reviews.

When it comes to actually buying and caring for your sofa, though, we turned to the experts: Alessia Lamonaca, owner and lead designer of New Mode Home; Nina Lichtenstein, founder of her namesake design firm; and Heather Goerzen, former interior designer and current design editor at Havenly. If you want some designer advice on securing the best couches for your space, scroll to the bottom of the article, where you’ll find plenty of useful advice from all three design experts. For now, though, let’s shop, shall we?

Modular Chaise Sectional

Looking for a white couch with the "cloud" vibe? Look no further than this 7th Avenue option, which Digital Deputy Editor Katelyn Lunders has in her apartment. She shares a bit about the assembly process: "Although I'm typically a build-it-myself kind of gal, 7th Avenue offered to cover the cost of the assembly, and since I suffer from a lack of upper body strength, it was a true luxury to sit back and relax while someone else put in the work," she says. "It's not really possible to sit up straight on this sofa, but that is kind of the point of the 'cloud couch' vibe. The base and back cushions are soft yet supportive, so you can sink in but still get up without assistance." And despite months of regular use, she says, she has noticed no cushion sinkage, even in her go-to spot, which is a must for creatures of habit that always sit on the same side of a couch.

The Essential Sofa

Associate Editor Jessica Cherner has Sabai's traditional sofa in navy recycled velvet and has a few thoughts. "I am not a handy person, but I was able to put this together in a matter of minutes," she says. "Full disclosure: The seat is a firm, like very firm, but I don't mind—especially because the back cushions are so cozy and plush. I've noticed that the spot where I tend to sit the most (right in the middle) has massively softened up in the years I've enjoyed my Sabai, but if you're looking for a cloud-like sofa that you can sink into, this may not be the one for you." If, however, you like the idea of opting out of fast design in support of the environment, Sabai will definitely become your new favorite place to shop because everything—from the manufacturing process to the materials themselves—is made in an eco-conscious way.

Andes 3-Piece Ottoman Sectional

"I love an L-shaped couch. It allows so much space for guests, but it's also a comfortable option when we're just lounging at home. Our couch works perfectly in the space since it against a wall making best use of the room's shape," according to one of our testers, Betty Ann Gilrain. The color is very versatile too—it doesn’t show dirt or hair, and plays well with both pattern and textures of all kinds of pillows." The best part about this sofa is that the oversized ottoman moves, so you can configure your own arrangement, depending on what works best in your specific space. Plus, if you're having people over and don't have room for it, simply stick it in the spare bedroom, and your sectional will transform into a traditional three-seater.

Chill Time 2-Piece Modular Sofa

"Every time we have guests over, they rave about how comfy this couch is—even friends who have slept on it overnight," admits Commerce Editor Samantha Jones. "The deep seats and pillowy cushions make it easy to curl up on while still providing adequate support. Plus, even though I was very skeptical about the longevity of a white couch (especially in New York City), I have found the upholstery quite easy to clean with a vacuum or my Bissell Little Green machine." If you accidentally spill something a bit harder to clean, simply unzip the cushion covers and toss them in the washing machine.

Miller Sofa

SEO Editor Kate McGregor says, "I chose this sofa primarily because I wanted a pop of color in my white box of an apartment. I wasn’t picky about materials, but the selling point was the price." She adds that the $1,000 price tag, the two-day shipping, and the sleek look of this sofa made it the easy winner. "Two years and countless naps later, and it's still holding up so well. It's also supportive enough that I can work from it during the day without becoming one of the cushions."

Nomad Leather Sectional

"I love a leather sofa because the material doesn't trap smells or dust compared to some other fabrics. When it came time to choose one for our apartment, I went with Burrow's Nomad model because it was marketed towards people living in small apartments (me) and it looked modern, which is the vibe of my current space," says Senior Commerce Editor Marina Liao. "I like that the sofa can be configured however you like—we opted for the removable chaise to make the three-seater into a L-shape, so that someone could lie down while watching TV." Plus, she adds, the leather manages to stay buttery soft without cracking or scratching—no matter how much use it gets. "Whenever friends ask me for a leather couch recommendation, I definitely say, if you have the budget, Burrow is by far one of the best high quality options for small-space living."

Tess Sofa

The best couches aren't necessarily the most expensive. In fact, we think there's something to be said about couches under $500. This one, with its streamlined shape, funky aqua hue, and sloped arms, is one of our favorites. It features two oversize cushions that are plusher than they may look, and matching back cushions with lightly tufted detail. Did we mention that buying this sofa means supporting a small business?

Square Arm Loveseat

Another stylish sofa under $500? This find from Corrigan Studio, one of Wayfair's best-selling brands. We're into this couch because of its subtle midcentury influences, including the tapered legs that angle outward, tufted back, low-profile design, and clean shapes. It also comes in two other colors, if white isn't your thing. Plus, the seat cushions are removable, so if you need to flip them over or move them around, feel free.

Grady Pleated Sofa

If you're working with a little living room, this 84-inch sofa may not be the right find for you because that's actually the smaller size. It also comes in a 96-inch size. For larger spaces, this elegant upholstered sofa is one of the best couches we've seen because it's completely customizable. First, choose between performance, velvet, linen, and cotton. Next, pick the color and pattern that suits your style. Luckily, there are more than a few options (141, to be specific). The best part, though, is the pleated detail, which gives this sophisticated sofa a tailored look.

Convertible Sectional Sofa

There's nothing more movie night-ready than a U-shaped sectional with extra-wide extensions. It has a 500-pound weight capacity, so feel free to invite the whole family to take a seat and lounge for hours on end. What's more, when you order this pretty piece, you get two pedals, three bolsters, a hardware bag, and useful instructions.

Axel Leather Sofa

A low-slung midcentury-inspired find from West Elm? Yes, please! Sometimes leather sofas can get a bad rap—especially when they look like they belong in a tacky bachelor pad—but if done right, they can be the perfect finishing touch in a living room. This one, which comes in three widths, is customizable, so if cognac doesn't really go with your space, you have 10 other options.

Chesterfield Roll Arm Sofa

First, choose the width (73, 88, and 98 inches). Second, pick the fabric and color. Next, just sit back and enjoy. Technically, this is a Chesterfield, but you may not recognize it because it doesn't feature the classic nailhead details and tufting, but it's an Edwardian-style Chesterfield alright. It's also hand-made by expert artisans at the brand's Sutter Street factory in North Carolina.

Kahli Sofa

At first glance, this Frontgate two-seater looks a bit simple, which is never a bad thing, but know that you can completely customize it, courtesy of the brand's 100 fabric options. It's also available in two sizes, making it perfect for any space. If you're wondering why it's so expensive, though, take a look at the flexible fiberglass rod suspension, which provides durable, long-term, and eco-friendly support that won't bend, warp, or crack—no matter the temperature or humidity levels.

Owen Chaise Sectional Sofa

We can't round up the best couches and not include a classic sectional, so here we are with perhaps the most elegant, plush sectional on the market, Castlery's Owen sofa. If you want to opt for a less traditional color, it also comes in a golden olive shade. Otherwise, keep things neutral with the gray and beige tones.

Plus, if you're a Soho House member, you can snag the bigger sofa (pictured) for $9,422. The unique shape and sumptuous material are both inspired by the brand's members club at 180 House in London.

What to Know About Buying a Couch

Because a sofa—even a small sofa—is bigger than most pieces of furniture in the living room, it’s worth doing some research to make sure it will both fit and work in your space for years to come. We asked Heather Goerzen, former interior designer and current design editor at Havenly, to weigh in with her thoughts on what to consider when buying a sofa.

Size: There are a few types of sofas, all of which vary in size, that work best in specific types of spaces. “Sectionals are best for larger living and family rooms. They are great for TV rooms, dens, basements, and in-home theaters,” Goerzen explains. “Traditional three- and four-seaters, which average 90 inches wide, really work in any and every living space. They are the gold standard.” When it comes to sofas like sleepers and loveseats, these are great options for anyone trying to maximize a small space. The size you get totally depends on your space. Word to the wise: Your sofa should be proportional in the room. If it’s too big or too small, the balance of the room is totally off, making the design feel a bit awkward. So before buying your sofa, make sure you measure. Some retailers, in fact, can even show you what a sofa will look like in your specific space.

Material: Sofas tend to be high-traffic spaces in the home, so don’t cover yours in a precious fabric. “Performance fabrics are best for sofas,” Goerzen notes. “Given advances in production, these performance fabrics are now incredibly chic (from classic weaves to linen lookalikes) as well as highly durable, kid-, and pet-friendly, stain-resistant, and best of all… no fuss.” There you have it.

Fill: When it comes to fill, no specific material is best, as it’s totally based on what you prefer. It’s kind of like your pillow in that way: Some people like it firm and others prefer to sink in. We’d recommend fiber-wrapped foam, though. It offers optimal support without being too firm, and it holds up remarkably well over time. Most sofas, however, are filled with just foam. The more luxurious alternatives feature a mixture of feathers or down and foam. It’s all about what you like best and how much you’re willing to spend.

How We Made Our Product Choices

When I started my search for the best couches on the market, I wanted to be sure I was looking in the most effective places, which included my own apartment and those of my fellow editors and friends, the Internet, and a few interior designers with truly fabulous taste. Once I started making the list, it was getting a little too long, so I narrowed it down based on first-hand testimony and verified reviews. When I got to 20 sofas, that seemed like a good place to stop because, with nearly two dozen options, I had more than enough variety for pretty much any reader to find what they're looking for, whether they're on a budget, working within a tight space, or more.

What Is the Average Lifespan of a Sofa?

Think of your sofa the same way you'd think of your most-loved jeans: They both get a lot of use, they're both comfortable, and, ideally, they last a long time. The cheap pair of jeans you picked up at Zara may look great, but they won't last season after season because they're not as well-made as, say, the jeans you bought from Levi's, a heritage brand that uses high-quality materials. Your sofa's lifespan will play out similarly: If you invest in a piece you love that's constructed with quality fill and durable upholstery, it will last at least five years. "Generally, a well-made sofa with high-quality materials and construction can last anywhere from seven to 15 years—or even longer with proper care," Lamonaca explains. Regular cleaning, avoiding excessive weight on the frame, and rotating cushions can extend its lifespan." She makes a good point. No matter how luxurious the sofa is, its frame isn't indestructable, so pay attention to the weight capacity before buying. If you plan on inviting your whole family and slew of friends to pile onto the couch for movie night, make sure the sofa can support all of that added weight! Luckily, all of our picks indicate their weight limit.

Should You Spend a Lot of Money on a Sofa?

The best sofas are not necessarily the most expensive. No matter how nice the one you have your eye on may be, it's not worth spending so much money on that you feel guilty every time you take a seat. That said, between the expensive picks and their more affordable alternatives, the former camp will likely be made with better, longer-lasting materials, but there are plenty of cheap finds that may suit your needs. "Choosing the perfect sofa involves a balance of style, comfort, and durability. Take the time to assess your needs and preferences before making a decision. A great sofa is not just a piece of furniture; it's an investment in your home's comfort and style that will be enjoyed for years to come," Lichtenstein explains. So, if you're wondering how much to spend on your sofa, ask yourself the following questions: How often will I use my sofa? How long do I want to keep this sofa? Will I be the only one sitting on it? Will I be eating on my sofa? Answering these pertinent questions will give you some guidance on what to buy and how much to spend. "Investing in a quality sofa is often worth the cost, considering its central role in your home and its longevity. A well-made sofa not only lasts longer but also provides superior comfort and aesthetic appeal," Lichtenstein adds.

How to Care for and Maintain Your Sofa

Sadly, cleaning our furniture isn't quite as easy as washing our dishes or clothes, but that is hardly a reason to skip doing it. After all, consider all of the surfaces you've sat on before plopping down on your couch: the bus or subway, planes, Ubers, conference room chairs, and movie theater seats, to name a few of the grossest. Even if you can't see the grime, bacteria, and dirt doesn't mean it's not there. "Leather sofas are easy to clean and develop a beautiful patina over time, while microfiber is stain-resistant and simple to wipe clean with a damp cloth. Both options are durable and require minimal upkeep compared to upholstered sofas," Lichtenstein says. If you're wondering how to clean your specific sofa, peep our guide here. The easiest way to maintain your sofa is to avoid eating or drinking on it. You may be able to disinfect it and get rid of any lingering particles, but stains don't always come out. Lamonaca adds, "Performance fabrics also offer exceptional durability and stain resistance, making them ideal for high-traffic areas or households with children and pets."

Why Trust House Beautiful?

When it comes to picking out the best (and often affordable) pieces for any space, Associate Shopping Editor Jessica Cherner has been reviewing furniture, appliances, and home must-haves for nearly eight years, having access to more than a few stylish samples, and working with countless interior designers on what makes a product worthy in the home. Not to mention, she's been on a never-ending quest to decorate her own New York City apartment with a budget and size constraint in mind, so you can trust that she has done her homework to find the best and most beloved pieces on the market.

For this story, Cherner spent hours combing through reviews, ratings, and tapped her fellow editors to find the best couches on the market right now for House Beautiful readers. In addition, she asked three interior designers to provide further insights on the types of couches to buy and what to look for when buying them. Before Heather Goerzen became Havenly's director of content and design, she was an interior designer there for a little over a year, decorating more than 20 spaces across the country. Barrie, Ontario, Canada-based Alessia Lamonaca started her own firm, New Mode Home, in 2020, and has since designed quite a few residential projects across her native Canada. Nina Lichtenstein operates her eponymous design firm out of Upstate, New York.
