These Are InStyle's Most-Read Features of the Year

It's hard enough to keep up with the Kardashians, so it's understandable if you weren't able to keep up with all of the great work the InStyle team published this year.

If you're looking for something to read while standing in line to board a plane, or standing in line at the mall, or standing in line for coffee, take a look below at the content that readers couldn't get enough of this year.

Withoutfurther ado, here are InStyle's 10 most-read feature stories of 2019.

The One About Friends’s 25th Anniversary

Could you be any more sick and tired of Friends references?

Given that this year marked the 25th anniversary of the beloved sitcom, it seemed like everyone and their pet duck was talking about the show. Thankfully, InStyle’s Isabel Jones was there for us. She reported that in 2019’s Generation Friends: An Inside Look at the Show That Defined a Television Era, author Saul Austerliz wrote that David Schwimmer pulled a total Ross and flubbed a line during a table read for the show, incidentally inspiring an actual, now-iconic plot twist. (If you know, you know.)

Fingers crossed that the Twitterverse will pivot to a new television obsession shortly.

When Melania Trump and Justin Trudeau Had a Moment

Resident Trump Administration Enigma Melania Trump doesn’t talk a whole lot. It’s a fact that drives people on the internet absolutely wild — Is she secretly anti-Trump?, they wonder. Is she complicit in his policy? What was she thinking with that coat?

It is with desperation, then, that we Very Online People latch onto her every last action in a futile attempt to glean meaning from her hand swats or yellow coats. This year, however, it was her “moment” with Justin Trudeau that got the people going — and, lucky for us, body language expert Patti Wood was there with a thorough read on the whole situation.

Lili Reinhart’s Least Favorite Trend of the Last Decade

Lili Reinhart was 16 years old in 2013, but thanks to a little Hollywood fairy dust, she got to live out the year all over again as a young stripper named Annabelle in Hustlers, a film which granted her both the privilege of physical proximity to Jennifer Lopez and a whole wardrobe of trends long forgotten.

But as these '00s trends make a comeback, Reinhart told InStyle she has some reservations about one particular trend. Honestly, fair.

Priyanka Chopra's Groundbreaking InStyle Cover

Priyanka Chopra is changing the game, and I’m not talking about her career as an international super star with acting and producing credits to her name. For InStyle’s July cover shoot, the 37-year-old made the decision to wear a sari by Indian designer Tarun Tahiliani. In fact, the entire shoot featured Chopra wearing both traditional Indian garments as well as pieces inspired by Indian fashion.

In an accompanying Instagram post, she wrote that the sari “embodies elegance, femininity, and power, and I love how I feel when I’m wearing one.”

That Time Reba McEntire Stripped 2 Layers on Stage

Reba McEntire … fashion icon? If you saw her opening performance at the 2019 CMAs in November, you’d be nodding your head emphatically at the idea.

During her 5-minute medley performance, the 64-year-old stripped two layers, beginning with a silk lavender wrap dress and concluding with a sparkly red jumpsuit — an homage to a specific 1991 performance.

To answer Reba’s own question – "How do you get a pantsuit out of a dress in under two seconds?” — InStyle’s Samantha Sutton spoke with the costume designer as well as the star herself.

The Photo of Meghan Markle That Will Go Down in History

Meghan Markle did some stuff this year, including but not limited to: Spotlighting and raising money for various organizations that are Doing Good Things, traveling the world with her husband, and sitting down to listen to those in the world who can use an ear most.

She also had a baby. In May, Markle welcomed her first child with Prince Harry, a happy little nugget named Archie who — though the odds were stacked against him — came into the world with instantly iconic red hair.

Leaning into her unofficial role as Super Relatable Royal Person, Markle appeared for her post-partum photoshoot (which occurred two days after Archie’s birth, rather than hours later, as was tradition), looking, relatably, like she had recently given birth to a child. In doing so, writes health reporter Sara Coughlin, she dispelled a huge myth about women’s post-partum bodies.

Leave Meghan Alone! (Feel Free to Be Mad at Prince Andrew, Though)

Surprise, surprise, Meghan Markle is the subject of two stories on our most-read list. This time, however, the circumstances are not quite as rosy as giving birth and being relatable and cool about it.

Though she’s been a certified member of the royal family for almost two years, and even birthed an heir to the throne, Meghan has continuously been the target of British tabloids, which write relentlessly of “diva behavior” and supposed feuds, and use thinly veiled racist language to do so. Meanwhile, Prince Andrew, the Queen’s second eldest son, was largely unbothered, despite the allegations of sexual misconduct made against him as well as his close personal relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Sound infuriating? InStyle's Kim Truong thought so, too.

Dakota Johnson Spoke the Truth

Do you hate periods? Do you love hyperbole? Then this Dakota Johnson interview is for you. “If I’m honest, my hormonal changes during my menstrual cycle are ruining my life. Every month. It’s unbelievable. It’s really fucking amazing. I can’t get a grip on it. I’m like, what?”

Dakota’s out here speaking everyone’s truth!

Lori Loughlin’s Courtroom Sketch Should Hang in the Louvre

Lori Loughlin, or “Aunt Becky,” if you’re a millennial, hasn’t seen publicity on this scale since she was bellowing the words, “wake up, San Francisco!” as a perky, Bob Saget-adjacent newscaster on Full House. This time, however, her coverage isn’t as glamorous.

InStyle has closely followed Loughlin’s involvement in the college admissions scandal since the news broke back in March, but the story that stood out above the rest was about her very first courtroom look — or, rather, the sketch of the actress on the stand, her arms folded across her creamy, high-necked sweater.

InStyle's Laura Norkin spoke with the sketch artist, who revealed the true story behind the now-iconic image.

Time’s Up Launched a Healthcare Initiative

Time’s Up — the organization that was launched in the wake of the #MeToo movement to combat workplace sexual harassment with legal aid and support — this year launched an offshoot explicitly targeting the healthcare industry.

Time’s Up Healthcare will provide support to both people who work in the medical field as well as patients who have experienced sexual harassment. In InStyle’s exclusive coverage of the launch, women bravely came forward with their experiences with abuse in the industry.

Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird Are the (Unofficial) Couple of the Year

“You’ve just won the [World Cup], what are you going to do next?” If you’re Megan Rapinoe, the answer is take over the world — with your partner by your side.

After walking away from the 2019 women’s World Cup with a win, the Golden Boot, and the Golden Ball, Megan returned to the States, where she continued her activist streak and also looked super adorable while posing for an InStyle shoot alongside her partner of two years, WNBA star Sue Bird. And those photos, though: Matching suits! Lipstick! Impossibly small espresso cups! Merry Christmas to us all.
