Despite skipping the red carpet, Lorde still stole the show at the 2018 Grammy Awards with her gown. As many of her colleagues chose to wear a white rose in solidarity with the Time's Up movement, the performer decided to show her support for the cause in a different way: by pinning one of Jenny Holzer’s Inflammatory Essays to the back of her dress.

Lorde wore a stunning red Valentino gown from the brand's Pre-Fall 2018 collection (which, by the way, she matched with a scarlet metal flask). Fans quickly noticed there was a note attached to the back of the bodice, stitched onto the dress with coordinating red thread.

She posted a close-up of it on Instagram, and captioned it: "My version of a white rose—THE APOCALYPSE WILL BLOSSOM — an excerpt from the greatest of all time, jenny holzer"

Lorde pulled the quote from Holzer's Inflammatory Essays, which were released in the late 1970s. According to the Art Institute, the full text, Untitled (Rejoice!), reads: “Rejoice! Our times are intolerable. Take courage, for the worst is a harbinger of the best. Only dire circumstance can precipitate the overthrow of oppressors. The old and corrupt must be laid to waste before the just can triumph. Opposition identifies and isolates the enemy. Conflict of interest must be seen for what it is. Do not support palliative gestures; they confuse the people and delay the inevitable confrontation. Delay is not tolerated for it jeopardizes the well-being of the majority. Contradiction will be heightened. The reckoning will be hastened by the staging of seed disturbances. The apocalypse will blossom.”

Twitter users showed their support for Lorde's bold choice of accessory, especially as it could be interpreted a response to reports that the Album of the Year nominee wasn't offered the opportunity to perform solo at this year's Grammys, as those up for the prize typically do.
