Instagram Unveils New Halloween Features

Just in time for all the spooky stories and 'grams.

It’s peak spooky season. Starbucks is busy serving up Witch’s Brew Frappuccinos, while on Twitter, Hallo-memes abound. Not to be left out, Instagram is currently celebrating with a few tricks and treats of its own. As Refinery29 reports, two ghostly new features have been added to the app just in time for October 31.

The first feature is an Instagram Stories camera filter dubbed the Haunted Halloween filter. Like most of IG’s other filters, it requires you to simply open your mouth to be utterly transformed. Two versions of the filter are available for each respective smartphone camera. The front camera variation will morph you into a pale-faced, ghoulish version of your original self, complete with bloody lips and a killer smoky eye. The other camera filter offers all the makings of a spine-tingling film production, in case you were hoping to rival Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

The second new Insta feature involves three Halloween-appropriate additions to the app’s emoji shortcut bar. Instagram users in the United States and Canada can now find a jack-o-lantern, a ghost, and a skull alongside their five most frequently used emojis, making it that much easier to bombard your friends’ posts with festive comments.

Here's hoping that Instagram continues to step up their holiday game. Maybe a turkey face filter for Thanksgiving? A snowy scene for Christmas? Free ideas, Insta! For now, I’ll happily embrace the spook-factor.
