Instacart driver gets $50 tip after chance encounter with customer: ‘Everything happens for a reason’

An Instacart driver is going viral after sharing the unconventional way he ended up with a $50 delivery tip

The uplifting story comes from Pablo Tamayo (@thisisntpablo), a popular TikToker who delivers groceries through Instacart. His video, which now has over 400,000 views, describes how a seemingly wasted delivery ended with an emotional exchange with a customer.

Tamayo’s clip is part of a long line of viral TikToks from Instacart drivers. In recent months, users have shared some of their best and worst experiences on the job — from noticing a life-threatening gas leak in a customer’s home to complaining about a 125-item order that was canceled just before checkout.

Tamayo’s video begins with his explaining how he accidentally accepted an order for a customer in Pacific Palisades, an extremely wealthy area of Los Angeles. The problem? The drop-off location was 45 minutes away.

“I was like, ‘Bruh, I’m definitely not gonna make enough money to cover the gas,'” he says in the clip. “Like, ‘What did I just do?'”

Regardless, Tamayo followed through with the order. After finally dropping the groceries at the customer’s house, Tamayo realized he was right by a large beach and couldn’t help but notice the beauty of his surroundings.

“Then I’m like, ‘Wait, this is such a beautiful view. I definitely want to stay here and watch the sunset,'” he goes on to say.

Quickly, the TikToker realized the beach was covered in trash. So he grabbed a bag from his car and started picking up litter as he walked.

Fifteen minutes later, Tamayo’s Instacart customer walked outside. At first Tamayo was sure he was in trouble for leaving his car outside the man’s house. As it turned out, though, the customer just wanted to compliment him.

“He was like, ‘No I don’t think you understand. I’ve lived here for over 35 years and I’ve never seen any neighbor pick up trash,'” Tamayo says, relaying the man’s comments.

Tamayo and the man began chatting about how strange it was that no one wanted to clean the beach. Eventually, the man left, and Tamayo got a notification on his phone.

“[He] tipped me $50 on Instacart,” Tamayo says. “So this morning I was bugging about nothing. And I picked up trash and I got a view.”

Tamayo then adds that “everything happens for a reason.” It was a sentiment many commenters seemed to agree with.

“You did something good for the universe and the universe said thank you!” one user wrote.

“What a full circle moment,” another agreed.
