More detail has emerged about why Shailene Woodley and Aaron Rodgers have ended their engagement—and sources have made it clear to People, E!, Us Weekly, and Entertainment Tonight that their relationship of less than two years failing isn’t a huge surprise to anyone close to them.

A source close to the former couple told People, “They fell hard and fast, but it was a mismatch from the start. Aaron’s a complicated guy. No one in their circle is surprised this didn’t work out. In the bubble of the pandemic, it was easy for them to fall in love and focus only on their relationship, but that’s not real life.”

E!’s source reiterated this: “They are two very different people. They are both focused on their careers but it took them in separate directions. They remain supportive of one another and on good terms.”

Us was told that their political differences also contributed. (Shailene is more liberal compared with Aaron.) “They certainly had their differences and ultimately their relationship didn’t work,” a source said. “They thought they were a good match for each other in the beginning, but the more they got to know each other, they realized their careers, their interests, and their political views weren’t aligned.” That source added that Aaron prioritized football over Shailene. “He was focusing more on the sport than on future plans with Shailene,” the source said.

Entertainment Tonight’s source added to this, saying their jobs as an actor and a football player made it tough to maintain a relationship. “[They] called it quits but remain friends,” the source said. “They tried to make their relationship work, but with busy careers in different industries, it was hard to see one another. The two have no animosity toward one another and plan to remain as friends.”
