Dinner and a show just got an upgrade in Lower Manhattan.

Celebrated chef Marcus Samuelsson opened a new restaurant at the Perelman Performing Arts Center on Wednesday. Metropolis will serve up food and drinks inspired by neighborhoods across New York City, from the Bronx to Brooklyn.

“New York is a city of constant change and evolution where generations of immigrants have made their mark building its future,” Samuelsson said in a statement. “At Metropolis, we’re tapping into that cultural flow and sharing how a restaurant contributes to that dialogue. Through food and drink, we want to capture what makes New York the most delicious place to be.”

Samuelsson worked with executive chef Ed Tinoco on the main menu, which begins with small plates like Flushing-style oysters (served with lemon, XO sauce, and oyster leaf) and smoked hamachi tacos with salsa cruda, caraflex slaw, and crema. A farmer’s market platter takes the place of a more traditional seafood tower, featuring seasonal fruits and vegetables that have been grilled, pickled, or fermented, alongside house-made condiments and dips.

Main dishes span from pastas (sheep’s milk triangoli or angel hair vongole) to heartier plates like short rib both braised and grilled, with potato churro, Jimmy Nardello, and truffles. A lamb trio includes neck, sausage, and chops, while arctic char comes with uni beurre blanc and agrodolce cucumbers. Finish off with sticky toffee cake, miso plum tart, or chocolate soufflé.

Drinks are the brainchild of beverage director Alexis Belton, who previously worked at the Aviary. The focus here is Martinis—served from a table-side cart—with both classic and more unique options, like a savory version with furikake and tomato. Specialty cocktails similarly contain funky ingredients: A Bubble Gum Sour has both strawberry and bubblegum, while the restaurant’s Appletini is replete with cheddar cheese vodka and apple pie spice.

The expansive, Rockwell Group–designed dining room seats 135 inside, while a seasonal terrace adds space for 70 in the warmer months. Black-stained wood furniture is lightened up by the addition of vintage rugs, while hints of burgundy give a nod to the Perelman’s performance hall.

The real show, though, may very well be in the center’s new restaurant.
